What exactly is the law regarding dogs in pubs or places selling food. Please note I'm not looking for opinions on whether or not you like dogs around where food is being served.
I wish I had a pound for every pub where I'm told "health and safety rules" when not permitting my dog. I say tosh! I dont believe all the places that do allow them would be knowingly breaking the law. Why not just say we just dont like dogs in our bar, it would be more honest and I would be less inclined to get uppity.
Guess you can guess my gripe for the day lol.

We have a jack russell and were in a pub every day on holiday and not one said no way (came back yesterday). Even when another dog came in and ours took a dislike to him we were not asked to leave. I took ours out and the other owner said they were going in the garden and as we were eating I went back in. Seems its down to the publican as to whether they want them in or not. Ours is never off the lead when outside the house either.
They can't very well say no when they are dog owners themselves either!!
Couple of shops we took him in, but only if they said he could go in. Otherwise OH stood at the door with him so they could see me and I did the same with OH looking round.
------------- No, really?!

Dogs are not allowed by law, into places where food is being prepared but there is nothing to stop them from accompanying owners inside the pub. It is up to the individual pub owner/manager who has the right, by law to refuse service to anyone if they so wish for any reason.
Lots of pubs do allow dogs in and sometimes allow them in the bar but not the restaurant others allow both, others none.

My local describes itself as a proper pub. It serves food, always busy and almost always has a couple of dogs in the top bar. It's not changed in 30 years at least either.

As far as I was aware, the law is no dogs or animals, where food is prepared, I think it's up to the owners if they allow dogs in the restaurant or bar, the same applies to shops I think it's up to the owners if hey let them come in, but it's not against the law, I always just ask if they can come in, I've even sat outside places and had the owners come out and say don't sit outside bring them in. One shop we went into gave them a biscuit each, and one restaurant the owner bought them over some cheese :)

There is no specific law which bans dogs from pubs. I can understand a
potential food hygiene issue but then the dogs are not (generally) in the area
where food is prepared. Official
Guidance indicates that dogs should not be in food preparation areas. If the
pub in question had, say, a carvery or salad bar in the pub bar then the dog could
reasonably not be allowed in that area as food is being prepared. However, under the terms of the Disability
Discrimination Act service providers (which includes pubs/restaurants) are
required to ensure that there are no physical barriers stopping or making it
unreasonably difficult for guide dog owners, and other blind and partially
sighted customers, to use their services. So, if you can enter with a guide
dog, it’s still just a dog but one that had special training. Probably in washing
their hands etc. So, if you are preparing food in the seating area, thus
banning dogs, you may be breaching the disability discrimination act. You can
have the carvery area with a barrier to prevent dogs going into that area and
that would be how you comply with the DDA. One chap has been awarded £500
compensation for being banned from a restaurant with his guide dog. Health and Safety is often used as an excuse by folk who cannot think of any sensible reason for not doing something or banning something. In view of the raft of health and safety legislation it is usually very difficult for anyone to challenge the claim. Next time you are given that as an excuse rather than an honest answer just ask "Well is there somewhere I can put my guide dog?" Phil

I think it should be remembered is that an equal if not greater number of customers who don't have dogs will considered it unhygienic to have them in a restaurant however small the real risk is and of course restaurant/pub management will take this into account when making their rules of who or what they accept into their establishment. The slight anomaly is that even the people that don't want dogs in restaurants/pubs are perfectly happy to accept Guide Dogs! The trouble with explanations is that a pub could just say that their policy is not to allow dogs but that could lead to discussions! Where as saying its down to health and safety is a good catchall phrase whether its justified or not!

My OH and I and 3 other couples had Sunday Lunch at the Cottage Inn near Embleton Northumberland a couple of weeks ago accompanied by EIGHT westies. They laid the table in the Conservatory for us, the meal was excellent and the westies were very well behaved. We were made to feel most welcome and afterwards we took the dogs for a run on the beach. The other diners nearly all came to say hello to them.

I personally wouldn't take my two inside - reason being they are big dogs and would take up a lot of room, some people dislike the breed also. Not everyone wants to eat a steak with a German Shepherd sat next to them! I do take them in the beer garden though, plenty of space.

Just back from Glen Coe where the local pub had six dogs in on Friday night including my springer...All bar two of the dogs were on leads and under control...One dog plonked himself on the raised area where the live music was being played and fell asleep at the feet of the guitarist...The other one was wandering round the bar getting petted by all and sundry..My springer slipped her collar at one point and went and lay down at the feet of a lady standing at the other end of the bar...I went to get her and bring her back...And apologized to the lady and her partner...Was told to leave her where she was...and the lady said she would keep an eye on her...
I was watching to see how my dog was behaving...Everyone on their way to and from the bar stopped for a pet and a wee talk to the dog...
I don't know the rules and regs regarding dogs in pubs...And can fully understand people not wanting dogs in the bar(especially if their not dog lovers) But can I just say I enjoyed the rare experience of being able to have my dog in the bar with me....The six dogs in there that night though off the lead were no problem...Where the centre of attention for a lot of people...and for me lent a certain ambience all their own to the atmosphere in the bar...Not one person(eating or not) approached me with anything but good vibes regarding my own dog though of course I cant speak for the other owners...
The general consensus from patrons that night seemed to have been favorable...Which might have had something to do with the demeanour of the six dogs involved...Who although sometimes seperate from their owners where not charging about causing bother...But for the most part were lying quietly at someones feet enjoying the attention....
Jelboy.

We have had as many as 30 Greyhounds in a pub garden and as many as 10 in the pub.
We organize walks for Greyhound and Lurcher owners in the Suffolk area. We always do a recce of the walk to make sure there is a pub at the end of the walk. We always make contact with the landlord. Only once have we had a problem and that was when one of the owners put a plate on the end of a table. The landlord watched as a Grey came along and licked the plate clean. He said he would have to throw the plate away afterwards. We did offer to pay for it but he said refused, we have been back since and not had a problem

That's because when a GSD looks at you with those "I'm so hungry and I've not been fed in a week eyes" Then they do that tilt the head to the right trick to make you feel guilty about eating in front of them
