Well, that was interesting; we had very high gusty winds for a while yesterday evening, accompanied by some interesting roaring sound effects and thunder and lightning! No damage here that I know of, but on the outskirts of Manchester they had a mini-tornado that ripped chunks off some houses, brought trees down etc. Not to mention the extreme weather further north, of course. An unwelcome postscript to Christmas for some people! Has anyone been affected? There's another storm out in the Atlantic trundling towards us, apparently. My garden's sodden already...

The tornado was in the Stalybridge area, east of Manchester on the edge of the Pennines. We felt the strong wind passing across last night, with a torrential downpour. But we've had endless rain before that, yesterday our back garden was full of water, just not quite overflowing. The drains on the main road must be full to overflowing as you have to drive round flooded parts. Still raining this morning, just glad it wasn't snow instead.

I’m hoping things settle down before we get on the ferry tomorrow to cross the Irish Sea! Our journey over last week was pretty rough so I’m really hoping for a better return leg tomorrow.

The wind and rain in Northern Ireland yesterday was atrocious. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it but thankfully it passed over us quite quickly.

Similar to us across the water in west Scotland. Many CalMac ferries are off or on alert so I hope yours is running tomorrow. Still blowing a hoolie here today, quite difficult to walk the dog. Power cuts affecting thousands still, train driver had a lucky escape when a mature tree fell across the cab near Dundee yesterday. A9 closed by snow for several hours too (typical winter, yes, but a huge Motorhome out in those conditions? A bit mad.)

Yes I saw that train on last night's BBC news. Being a retired train driver myself it sent a chill up my spine! Travelling at speed, by the time you've seen it it's already too late to be able to stop.

Not been too bad here so far today, strong winds but mainly sunny this morning. Quite cloudy though with a few showers.

Why all the foreign names? We will be in Derbyshire then so can stay at the site another night if we have to.

Just had a lovely winter thunderstorm in Leeds. Thankful I wasn't out in it, never seen rain like it in the UK, more like Singapore without the 30 degree heat!

The UK Met Office names them in partnership with the Irish equivalent Met Éireann (hence Ciarán etc) and KNMI (the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute - I think Babet might have been theirs).

We have had high winds for the past 3 days and only dying down today. I've had to take the cover off the bike as it blew over in one of the other storms. A 120kg bike.
The dog refuses to go on long walks and now they are saying the next one will hit on Sunday.

I was wondering who was responsible for Gerrit - Henk must be from the Netherlands again. Ah well, it adds variety! I do feel a bit sorry for anyone with those names, I bet they get teased. I think a bomb cyclone is when the pressure drops very rapidly, with fairly violent results. It can also add to storm surges when tides are high.

My crossing from Ireland yesterday wasn’t nearly as bad as I had feared. The two new Stena ferries on the Belfast to Liverpool route seem very well stabilised so even though the waves looked bad out the window, and the shipping forecast described the Irish Sea as rough, the crossing was not too bad. We had a cabin, even though it was during the day, as the crossing is 8 hours, and I managed to sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon when my husband informs me, the sea was roughest!

It looks like there will be a lot of rain here over the next few days, it seems to have done nothing but rain since that September heat wave ended!

Wet here again today, at Park Farm near M1 j25, but at least we had a lovely sunset. Good views to south and west. Just in case anyone remembers, the M18/M1 junction was fine yesterday.
