My Insurance is not due for renewal until October but as I am over 80 yrs I am looking around for an Insurance Company that I might be able to afford when the time comes to renew
If anyone has any suggestions or can provide some advice etc it would be appreciated I am at present insured with AXA but my last premium had increased by over £350 up to £772 so I’m expecting it will go up again this time

It's difficult to advise with reference to car insurance as much of the quotes are influenced by the postcode where you live. A person can have an identical vehicle to yours who lives 100 miles away and the quotations could be very much different. I've tried several car insurance companies over the last two years but believe it or not, NFU refused to provide insurance but on what grounds I don't know. I've been insured with Saga for many years then the quotation escalated to a degree where it increased by about 60% so started looking elsewhere. Last year I was insured by Lloyd's which was just over half the price of Saga but then their renewal increased dramatically. After contacting several well known insurance companies without any luck I eventually did a comparison search with 'Resolver' which was the best quote at £440 with 'Hastings Direct' for a 2016 Skoda Octavia Scout.

I didn't have any problem with NFU, that is who I switched to last November. They weren't the cheapest but they were certainly the best value for what they offered. Everyone has different circumstance though I suppose.

We were both with John Lewis, then twigged that many insurers are just brokers underwritten by a different insurance company, stated on the paperwork. So we went to the underwriter insurance & halved the amount (£700 odd to £300 odd). For that reason, we’re now with RIAS, but as others have said, there are so many factors that one company that suits some might not suit other people.

There is also the vehicle involved. One company may "like" a particular vehicle and another "dislike" it. One company I was with was giving me a very reasonable rate on a Volvo V70, but when I tried them for my X Trail their price was sky-high! Switched to a different company and got a much better price. Just out of curiosity I tried the new company with a quote for the Volvo, and the price was through the roof! I once had a similar result with a Mk2 Cortina and a VW camper conversion. No internet in those days so I was going through a local broker. There doesn't seem to be any logic in it that a layman can understand.

I look after my dads insurance for him as he wouldn’t know one end of a computer from the other. When he turned 80, the best price for a few years was with Direct Line. However, when he turned 85 that shot up. We shopped around and got a good deal with LV. Initially, the quote was high with just my dad on the insurance, however, someone suggested adding me as a named driver to the policy and it came down a lot! Dad is still the main driver on the policy but just by adding me as a named driver seemed to make a difference.

Perhaps I should add myself as a named driver, says the girl who couldn't pass her driving test. I could drive but overcome with nerves each time.

RAC wanted to up mine by over £400 to just about £1100, had a right good laugh at that!

Went on the Meerkat and ended up getting it for just over £400, can't believe I'm paying about £200 less than last year.
This was all done just last month.

Car insurance, what a racket, having been a company car driver for 40 years that ended in 2021, at the time used car prices were silly, so I was without a car for 18 months, to be fair it was good for my health as I was cycling to work and everywhere else, lost a couple of stone at the same time as well.

Anyway I had to bite the bullet in June 2023, and as luck would have it a family member over in Doncaster who buys and sells cars came to my rescue, and sorted me a car for £2K that would pull my 750kg camping trailer, nothing special and a late 2010 marque French of course to match my trailer !, but fine for what I needed.

I had letters from my previous employer detailing that I had not been involved in any motoring incidents going back ten years, and that my annual mileage had been 30k miles each year, add to that having zero points on my licence, you would think that I was a good bet, especially as I would be doing less than 10k miles each year.

So online I went, compare the market and all the rest, quotes were ranging from £1,800 up to £2,800 maybe they thought I was going to be driving around in Ukraine & Gaza who knows.

Anyway, I went to a broker who specialises in drivers like me, obviously high risk going of the quotes that I had been getting.

And that did work, as I got my insurance for £650 which was still pretty steep I thought, but beggars cant be choosers.

My renewal is a couple of months away, cant wait.

Oh the joys of being a car owner, I have really missed out this last 40 years.

I have to laugh, in that if I didn't laugh I'd cry kind of way when people get upset at £400 car insurance!

My last cover was twice that, with a clean licence, decades of no claims and a mundane 1.2 litre family MPV car doing only a few thousand miles a year, cant wait for the upcoming renewal! - all because of where I live in the outskirts of the big smoke!

Local friends have had recent qoutes for £1200 for a very old Prious, because they only passed their test a few years ago, another £2200 on a RR Evoke that was 6 years old! Both with clean licenses and impecable claims record!

There is absolutely no doubt, where you live makes a HUGE difference! And because of where I live, some insurers just plain refuse to offer cover at any price, so shopping around option is limited!

Yep, blueexpo97 I still covet Tesla, and specifically the Model Y, which is undoubtedly the best car in the world, nothing comes close, and never will.

Only 73 but the insurance quote for renewal on an xc60 went from 380ish to 980ish. I phoned to cancel auto renewal and guy I spoke to couldn't give a reason for the nearly 200% increase. Kicked them to touch and got it elsewhere, slightly up but not £600 up. Robbing barstewards. Probably a loyalty thing.
