I’ve been looking for blancmange powder to buy, ready for the Christmas trifles (we prefer blancmange to custard in a trifle). I’ve tried Asda, Tesco and Morrison’s supermarkets without success (we don’t have Sainsbury’s or Waitrose up here!) - not even a space/ticket on the shelf to show they might normally stock it. Next to try are Home Bargains and B&M.
Any thoughts on where I might get some, or is blancmange now a thing of the past?

Bit like Custard, the packet variety is only one way of making it, you can also do it the traditional way with real eggs!
Seems there's plenty available online. A quick google search throws up various flavours, pack sizes, multi-flavour sizes etc.
Greens cakes, Amazon, EBay, to name but a few.

Thanks - why didn't I think of that!!!
Just seeing the word blancmange for the first time in decades caught my attention!
Brought back wonderful memories of thick, gloopy warm blancmange (like a really thick custard... not quite set) with cornflakes! A firm favourite amongst many from junior school puddings, way back in the early 70's!
It was the quickest, shortest Google search in history... so many options jumped out at me, I put on 7lbs before I could even post on here!

I make my custard by creaming the powder with brandy (from the same bottle that will later fire up the Christmas pudding) before adding the rest of the milk - ideally from Ayrshire coos but that’s hard to get these days. Brown sugar not white for that added treacley taste.
Can I do the same with blancmange powder?
I think it must be a generational thing as I have never tasted blancmange but my husband (who is a good bit older than me) remembers it well from his childhood. I just found a recipe online by Prue Leith for a raspberry blancmange which sounds lovely so I’m definitely going to have a go at that!
I hope you find your powder bofs but if not, it doesn’t look hard to make.
I tried the Prue Leith raspberry blancmange recipe today and can confirm that it worked well and was really delicious! If I was doing it again I would put a bit less gelatine in it as my husband informs me that it should have a bit of a wobble but mine set quite firmly, more like a mousse! Prue puts some ground almonds in as well which I don’t think are necessary as they give it a slightly grainy texture so will leave them out the next time.
Altogether though, it was a hit in our household made even better by the fact that my local supermarket gave me 5 boxes of raspberries for free when I pointed out that they were out of date!
Thanks everybody for your input. No trace of blancmange in our Tesco store unfortunately, so we've ordered a dozen packets of strawberry (which we use in our strawberry trifles) via good old Amazon. We may not use all 12 packets before the best before date, but it's blancmange powder - how can it go off!!!
Can't believe you've never tasted blancmange Pixie_Hex! I'll check out the Prue Leith recipe and may give it a try, though will be leaving out the ground almonds - don't like the taste.
Definitely agree, Mucker - cornflake pie and pink custard (aka blancmange), one of the all-time favourite school dinner puddings.
Fiona W, I'll be pinching your idea for making the custard for with the Christmas pudding - sounds delicious!
