Ok going from the M1 earlier, but the opposite direction was horrendous. Does anyone know if it is often a problem? Thinking of going back down the A1.
The stretch around Meadowhall is always busy (i have family not far from Jcn 31).
There are currently roadworks to increase the number of refuge areas in the four lane section at jcn 34/35 and last night a lorry fire wrecked the road surface between 31 and 32 so it had to be closed, hence the huge queues.
As always before travelling check which route is quietest before setting off. I'm actually down there tomorrow and will be doing just that. I often 'escape' north of Rotherham and use local roads to get to 31.

Thanks marg6. Think I will unbook the site in Derbyshire then and look for another.
You're going to change sites for a date in future, due to a motorway hold up today?
For what its worth; we always use the A1 when going up to Yorkshire. Its about 30 miles less than the M1 to 'home' but they both have the same timescales. You have to weigh up the shorter journey on the 2 lane road, against the longer run on the 3/4 lane M1. If you get a hold up on the A1 it stuffs it right up for ages.

I was asking whether this is a regular occurrence, and it's for 28th December. Don't want to be in an hour long hold up which we saw yesterday.
Our route is from Whitby to Drax, then home to Luton so can use either road. Don't need snide comments...just useful suggestions. M1 is quicker, unless we have the hold up we saw yesterday.
If the A1 roadworks near Darrington (south of Ferrybridge) are still in place avoid, avoid, avoid.
I needed to go to Doncaster from Leeds a few weeks ago and ended up on a wild detour after being stuck there for half an hour going nowhere and it was a Sunday!
I've just been on the M1 - Leeds to jcn 31 and back (return run was just before 5pm) no issues whatseover. Even the 40mph 3 lane section was flowing well.
Family said every road sround jcn 31 was mad yesterday, villages gridlocked as motorway traffic found alternative routes.
Thanks, not familiar with the junction numbers. We came from the M1 to M18 and then crossed the A1 junction, that is the way we are thinking of going on our return, would that affect us?

Well, I used a route planner....and where is Darrington? and Ferrybridge?
ferrybridge is the junction of the m62/a1
darrington is on the a1 south of the ferrybridge juntion approximately 2 miles
mrs B seeing as your using drax site for going home i would A1041 snaith and then get on the a614 and pick up the m18 south to the a1, you can then either use that or carry on to the m1
