I brought my son a Tissot watch for his 18 birthday in Nov.
Unfortunately he dropped it in the house and the glass front came off.
He didn’t want to tell me he’d broke it, so him and his girlfriend took it to H Samuels back in January to see if they could fix it.
Samuels took the watch and said they would have to find out a price for it.
A few weeks later they told my son it would cost a £160 to fix!!
Like a doughnut teenager that he is, he said ok.
They said it would need a service and quite a bit of work to fix (even though it’s a brand new watch?)
I realised I hadn’t seen the watch and found out what happened. Called Samuels and said, not paying that price I wanted the watch back.
The shop assistant told me he would try get the watch back, but then a week later, said he was locked out of the computer and the day he got back in, the repair had started so nothing he would do.
I am absolutely seething, they have now had the watch longer than we did, apparently it’s going to take till end of may to fix.

We send our watches back to the manufacturer (Seiko) when they need repair or a service. When I put my Seiko to H Samuels for a new £10 battery, they lost the seal around the battery opening in the back room & didn’t tell me. The next “proper” jeweller who replaced the battery 2 years later (when we were away) said the seal was missing, but they couldn’t replace it. Off went the watch to Seiko for the seal & service (it’s about 50 years old) & I’ve never been back to H Samuels.

I would definetly be questioning the requirement for a service on a more or less new watch.

if it's taking until may for the repair, they will be waiting for a new glass so probably haven't even started it yet, lets be honest they are not going to leave a watch in bits for a month

i'd be asking for a manager or area manager and demand the watch back

Get the watch back and contact Tissot for their local authorised repairer.

Chances are Samuals will be sending it to a Tissot repairer and taking a cut.

However expensive watches are like expensive cars, they will always be expensive to fix, even if you think the parts should be cheap.

Yes I’ve asked for it back, but they are insisting that work has been started already and it’s too late.
I’ve called the head office, they were no help at all.
I’ve emailed Tissot today.
The glass shouldn’t have come out so easy anyway and wasn’t broke or anything.
It’s a nightmare

Obviously, it is not an "H Samual Everite Watch"

Sorry, just had to say that. Anybody else remember them?

We both have Tissot watches which needed attention. Wife's a battery my automatic a new winder. We have a Timepiece watch repair shop in town who are very helpful. My Tissot was sent away fior repair and service, they did my wife's one.
I have also had a Seiko repaired there. They pressure test them after fitting a new seal. Prices are reasonable too.

Our local jeweler would have sorted that in an afternoon, if the glass was intact. You've been striped!

From H Samuel's website:

'...when you consider the shelf life of a classic timepiece, you begin to understand why it’s so important to get it serviced every three years. Keep reading to find exactly how our repairs team can help with that – from a simple battery replacement through to a full service on a mechanical, quartz or automatic watch.'

Were they made aware the watch is just a few months old and it's just the glass that's popped out? If it was still working, why would they need to service it? Sounds like they've identified your son as an easy target.

When you instructed them to return the watch, did you do that in writing (email)?

It's highly unlikely they have started the repair if they're stating it won't be ready until end of May!

What does it state on their receipt? Are there any T&Cs?

Poor lad, sounds like he was only trying to resolve this without upsetting you. But clearly has been ripped off.

Put things in writing, mzzy, from your son's email address. Remember, he is their customer.

Best of luck with it!

Thanks everyone
So the watch is back at samuels now.
They say nothing they can do about the price (£160) as Tissot quoted the price.
Tissot obviously did an all singing/dancing repair to cover themselves.
Samuels say as Tissot are the manufacturer of the watch, problem is for them to sort.
Tissot say they simply carried out samuels instructions to fix the watch.
Head office customer service, which are not customer service, as they have told me to sort it myself!
So I have just sent yet another email to Tissot, saying the watch must if been faulty for the glass to come off in the first place!
Obviously I’d of taken it back as faulty in first place had my son not tried to help by getting it repaired.
It’s all a nightmare and a good chance now, we will never go to pay the £160 because it’s only £40 less than a new watch 😭

My Wife has used Resolver on several occasions, got six full flight refunds from Virgin Atlantic after their plane was delayed over 8 hours from Florida . She got a full refund from Paypal ( way after their 90 day timeframe) for the cost of tickets for comedy in the park after the event company went bust ( very suspect ! ) maybe worth your while having a butchers ?

When you bought the watch the contract was between you and H Samuel, not between you and Tissot. Regardless, such contract is superseded by H Samuel acting as the "seller" for the repair, which makes them liable for the repair - you shouldnt be talking to Tissot unless it is Tissot you are paying.   If you are paying Samuels your legal contract is with Samuels.

watches have 100% mark-up so if you paid £200 samuels only paid £100, if you cant get this repair done free or at cost, i'd leave it and look for another that's on offer

In case you missed it, apparently the watch was "damaged". However when the watch was taken to H Samuel for repair and a contract was formed between H Samuel and the consumer which in this case was the 18 year old son. H Samuel then outsourced the watch to a third party although the contract for the repair was between H Samuel and the consumer.

However the other issue is that the consumer agreed to the cost of the repair which was £160 and that is binding. This issue cannot be won in any court of law and unfortunately is a lesson to be learnt.
