Because of the way tones in your natural colour can affect the outcome, I'd have it done professionally once and take a note of the numbers of the colours used. Then go to a hairdressing wholesaler and buy the same stuff, plus a highlighting cap, and do your own.

I did this for years and saved myself a fortune. Then the colour was discontinued and it took me years to find another one that was just right, so I go to the salon now.

Mine costs £52.50 including cut and blow dry, products, drinks etc. When my hairdresser was on maternity leave, I went to a different salon nearby and got charged £115! There's a huge variation in charges imo.

I don't look at it as a payment for a single event. The cut is one I can manage easily myself, can dry it in 10 mins, with just a hairdryer and no brushes.  I'm not brave enough to try any of the home kits!!

Ditto.

My hair is my only indulgence<img align="absmiddle" src="forum_images/smiley1.gif" width="17" alt="17">.  I've worked all my life, I don't drink, don't smoke, I never go shopping because I hate it and we haven't been abroad for about 10 years!

It's my one indulgence too, I've quit cigs, I don't drink, I only shop when I really have to.

I don't smoke, I don't go shopping as hate it, I do drink but only very occasionally, haven't been abroad since 2006.

I just can't afford £90 haircuts 17  especially with a 14 year old who has her hair dyed now, I have just sacrificed having my hair done so she can have hers done, grrr17  you should see my roots 17

But as  my hairdresser seems to be doing the same thing as a £90 cut I wouldn't pay the higher price anyway. However everyone sees things differently so if your prepared to pay it then that's great!

I think it varies from salon to salon and areas, I used to have a male hairdresser come round to my house and do everything for £40, he moved away sadly so I was forced to go to a salon, ive been to different places all varying in prices, the dearest arnt always the best, pays to shop around sometimes, and ask people who their hairdresser is.

This has been a very interesting read.

I must say that I nearly fainted away dead when she said it would be £90, but from what I'm seeing here, that is normal in some places. However, not for me I'm afraid. I can do a lot with £90 (our new tent was only £160 and that's holidays for us for a few years at least).

As there are good quality hair products out there I'm willing to give it a bash. Nice 'n Easy is a name that crops up a lot so I'll pop to Superdrug at the weekend. I can always wear a hat if it goes wrong.

If you wait until the term time for your local college then the Hair and beauty department often run their own 'salon' for models to come and get their hair done, most just charge the basic price of the products they use, plus a welcome tip for the student stylist. I used to go regularly when we lived in the city, but were just too far away now to make it convienient.

I have recently taken to using clip in highlights/extentions for special occasions after seeing how good they looked in my daughters hair last year when she got married, reasonably priced, and easy to put in after a bit of practice, and no one can tell that they are not your own natural hair.

I pay £7 for a dry cut then go home and do my own . I have short hair too
I Use Recital Preference, used to be Blondimiser range.
Because my hair is short and cut every 4 weeks it avoids over processing as most is cut off before being redone. easy peasy , done it for years. 17

Any salon suppliers for a cap and a hook to pull the hair through, easiest diy way if your hair is short and you don't want to block colour your hair.

Depending on your hair type ie does it lift easily, if it does then you should be ok with a highlighting kit from boots/superdrug, which come with gloves/brush etc.

If you have red undertones then an 'ash' blonde colour would be best.

John freida do a great range of blonde colours, the new foam is a doddle to use.

As previously mentioned always do a patch skin test at least 24hrs before you plan to colour your hair. Even if you've used the product before.

I was quoted £140.00 at a very well known hairdressing chain last week for 3 colours and a cut and blowdry...

Definitely ask or google for your local college doing hairdressing qualifications. I go to Sensi at Derby College for my haircut. They have level 3 students who do a very good job and there's always their tutors around to advise them and their prices are very reasonable.

Reporting back here on a successful home highlighting morning.

I used Jerome Russell BBlonde Highlight Kit (£6-odd from Boots) and spent a morning following the instructions carefully. Also enlisted the help of OH to do the bits I couldn't reach.

Sat and read the papers whilst drinking coffee (just like the salon) and then shampooed off. Result: lovely bright highlights, no different to what I would get at a proper hairdressers. I'm really chuffed!
