Sorry to hear about your Dad, it's hard going. Still miss mine 20 years on. We camped with our dog without any probs, but you do have to be aware that it isn't like your house and garden, you have to keep them on a rope or otherwise contained (which can make them frustrated and barky). Also tents get very hot, so you have to be aware of that; and so do cars. In short, when going away with a dog, tent or otherwise, you have to be prepared for it to curtail your activities. Our dog is part of the family and I would no more resent his curtailment of our activities than I would any other member of the family who couldn't join in, but you need to plan for this in advance.
