after nearly a year out of work and applying for any job going, my eldest son was very disheartened because of not recieving any response from the companies he had applied to. i find this disgusting when people have taken the time and effort to come to see you a no thankyou letter should be sent as a matter of decency. fortunately he has found a job with a very good company on a very good wage, he is a vehicle technician/mechanic and the interview process was as he described weird! they showed him a car in the workshop that had a major fuel system fault and said, see if you can figure out whats wrong with it? then left him to it. after 20 minutes he had the car running perfectly and the owner came out and asked him how much he wanted an hour and could he start straight away! when he asked the owner did he want to see his references and qualifications he said no i want people who can do, not people who think they can!

If only more employers were like this.Ive worked with people who are qualified up to the hilt on paper but cant do the job at hand.
Some spend too much time in education getting more qualifications rather than spending some time applying what they have already learnt.
It sounds like your sons employer has encountered this in the past hence the interview style, something to be applauded in this day and age. This style of interview shows straight away who can do the job and who can talk about it.
Many are great at doing interviews and have all the talk but actually doing the job is beyond them in some cases.

My wife was unemployed for a period, I dont think she ever received a rejection just from an application.
She did get them if she had got as far as interview, but sometimes not until 6 weeks later, presumably they wait to see if the "successful" applicant actually starts work.
My wife also has the "paperwork" issue.
She is L2 in childcare, but worked for 6 moths doing a L3 job, so can do it, she had started work on her L3 qualification when the Co the was working for closed, and these quals being a vocational thing, you have to be working IN childcare to DO the qualification, catch 22, is every where wants people WITH a level 3, which you CANNOT do without working, stupid, I know, but if there is a way round it, we have not found it, and its not form want of trying.
