Definatly got to agree with Kernow Camper.

If you're in the caravan club their pet insurance is fantastic. You're covered for 7k per yr every year. You pay 1 excess per yr NOT per condition. Guaranteed pay out in 5 working days from receiving the claim and i can verify this as i claim a lot for an ongoing condition. Their customer service is 2nd to none i think you would find it hard to find better.

But is that really good they are getting rid of you by making the price so high at the time when you need your insurance most. I'm not criticising I'm just asking after my own experiences?

 

When looking for insurance do remember to look at the excess. Some companys charge an excess per claim, plus you have to pay a percentage toward the bill.

 

My recent experience was that our bill was £2900 total but £252 of that was to my own vet then the rest to the specialist. As my dog had got older they had changed the percentage of the bill we paid to 30% plus £150 excess. But they charged this on each different vets bill not the overall bill even though it was for the same condition. They did then not charge the excess on subsequent visits but we did still have to pay the 30%.

 

What made it worse was it took 6 months to get the money because the specialist failed to fill out the paperwork until I harassed them. Even so it still took on average 6-8 weeks for the money to arrive in my bank account which if you are paying for a very expensive on going treatment can be very difficult.

 

Neither vet dealt with any insurer direct and the specialist is one of the big referal centres in the midlands so likely to be used by many people on here.

 

On the plus side the veterinary treatment was outstanding I wish human doctors would develop the comunication skills of vets.

Like every sort of insurance, it is risk based. A 12.5 year old dog is a big risk, hence the premiums. Not a case of getting rid of but a case of cost versus risk.

We had expected it too Ali.  We spoke to our vet at the time of the renewal, worked out that Paddy's yearly meds cost us around £450 per year and discussed whether we'd ever put him through a major op at his age (and we won't). Both us and our vet decided not to bother with the insurance this year.  Whatever Paddy needs, Paddy will get regardless of cost anyway!!

came through from petplan,so will be staying with them.
