I wondered that, but why not say a dropped valve, which would be a viable expression whereas a "dropped tappet" smacks to me of someone trying to pull the wool over someone's eyes.
As in "(Sharp intake of breath)You've got a dropped tappet there mate! it's distorted your scrofulating flange, and they're like hens teeth! not worth repairing for what it'll cost".

I havent read all way through out of idleness, but i'd be surprised if there wasnt at least one post asking 'whats a tappet'?
I know what a tappet is, which is why I cannot understand how one has "dropped".
Either someone is talking out of their backsides or they are taking the Mick
Frank
Thank you for your pointed answer Frank. My friend who listened to it for me (I'm deaf)isn't in the game of conning anyone. I might have misunderstood him. Anyway cam cover is off, what a palaver. Under the cambelt cover was a long shard of metal. He now suspects the belt has jumped a tooth or two, So tomorrow is head off day and see what damage has been done.
On the puppy front mum and all six boys doing well
Funky, if you had "dropped a valve", the damage would probably have been done inside the cylinder and not under the cam cover. Valves would probably be bent and the engine wouldn't run. If you've found a shard of metal there, my guess would be a camshaft bush/bearing that's collapsed. Bad luck usually happens when you don't need it!

Yep It's terminal. Both camshaft sprockets are damaged. One has a bit broken off which has damaged the other. 8 exhaust valves need replacing and the piston heads are indented. So it's the great crusher in the sky I'm afraid!!!
Re the dropped tappet He did say valve. I just didn't hear him correctly. Anyway got another cheap car now, so this episode is history.
