How I do them, Chop your onions ,I use red & white purely for the colour,Good dolop of Ketchup, 2 tsp paprika, chilli powder to taste ( gets hotter as it stands)squirt of lemon juice, tomato puree if it gets a bit thin.
Should stick to the onions but not smother them, adjust ingredients to the amount of onion & personal taste.

Mix these up and add flour but only enough to make sure the paste is not runny, or you can add a drop of water if too dry.Shape and leave for 15 minutes before frying.
