Whilst I don't have a Volvo. I had an engine manegement issue on my Honda last week. A quick check online said it was pointless taking it to a generic garage as the only have access to a short list of manufacturers fault codes. This was bourne out by 4 other online owners struggling and ending up paying twice, typically a local garage and then main dealer.
Anyway, my story, booked into Honda for diagnostics. It took 45 minutes. There was a software issue in the ECU and it needed a software update, it cleared the fault and the car runs better, quicker, and gets about 7 more mpg. The local garage could not have done the update. For my issue, my local garage had suggested changing the fuel filter ( which I declined)
Total cost was £95 from main dealer.
I'm a happy man and if your car was mine, it would be main dealer for ECU issues.
We have a D5 V70 2.4 with about 120k on the clock.
We did get a similar error, but it was connected to the fuel filter which was changed and fine.
Hope you get it sorted, we love our Volvo!

Main dealer is the answer. We have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which very annoyingly has had a number of problems in its first year. I blame the fact that FIAT have now taken over Chrysler.
It became apparent that no independent garage could have sorted the issues. In fact we needed a visit from a technician in Italy.
I know it's expensive, but motoring just is these days. I would never be easy in my mind if I didn't use the main dealers.

i had this problem with my S80 after it had had a service at a garage that wasnt a Volvo one....it turns out that the oil was filled too full and should only be filled 75%....dont know if this is the same problem as yours but that was the message that kept appearing on my screen thing!!!
I initially took my Volvo to a local non Volvo garage too (as stated in my first post) who did the vehicle service but today took my car to a Volvo dealer today for a diagnostic check and the results found were to be exactly the same. Too much oil in the sump, so some was drained out to a 75% quantity which the engine system message has now been cleared and solved the problem. TMS Volvo at Hinckley was extremely helpful though as they only charged me £57 for the diagnostic check and drained part of the oil for me at no extra cost so full marks to TMS Volvo for their excellent customer service. Also a big thank you to you penguin73 for your answer which was absolutely spot on.
you are welcome.....cant wait to tell my husband that I was right about something for once!!!

manufacturer have to share ECU info now by lay (think it came in around 2004 with a euro directive etc) however many garages do not have the full kit to do the diagnostics.
I know of only one round me that has the all singing all dancing stuff, cost him around £4000 for the kit, alot of garages have cheap code readers for a few hundred, and as such cant diagnose/fix everything.
Find a good garage with the right kit, and they can sort it.
Been back with a Volvo report and receipt to the garage this afternoon that did the service and after a short debate about being told that the oil level sensor being faulty I explained that I could have been over £200 out of pocket regarding the new part plus labour charge to change it. After all it would not have cured the problem as the message would have been displayed again afterwards so eventually they decided to reimburse me so I managed got my £57 back as they know I would have taken the issue further. I think it only fair as I could have been asking for reimbursement of over £200 if the unnecessary work had been undertaken.
