Can insure it where you buy it as an extra on the package. I have mine done through Tesco. No.2 son does his through his bank, part of the package on his account.
Can I play Devils' Advocate here.....you said that your grandaughter lost her phone and Mum decided it would teach her to be more careful if she had to use her old one. Have you actually discussed with Mum whether it is OK for you to get a new phone? I know that if my child had lost her phone and Gran came in with a new one then I'd be a little peeved to say the least. Offer her a bit more towards a new one, but I really wouldn't just go ahead and buy one.
And yes, you can insure mobiles.....all of my girls have lost at least one and, without the insurance, would have been without a phone for months instead of days!
my teen is more than happy with her Galaxy Ace 2 which I bought for her xmas because her contract phone was an lg cookie as wasnt cutting the mustard, but last week it was stolen at Thorpe Park.
Luckily she was due an upgrade in june so she was able to get an upgrade for free to Galaxy Ace 2 on her £10/month contract which gives her unlimited text and data and 100 minutes... the ideal package fr a teen.
She would like an iphone but, especially after last week, realises for a teen an android is better... and in future says shell take her cookie if she goes nywhere iys likely to be nicked gain.

I was thinking much the same. I know she didn't lose it on purpose, but with the ruling of Mum I think I would check with her first!
I have spoken to Mum of course and she said if that is what I wanted to do then go ahead. She wasn't totally in agreement at first but I talked her round. She says I'm too soft.

If it's ok with mum then I would be more inclined to take your Grandaughter out with you and just 'pop' into a phone shop and have a look at what's out there. She may have definite ideas about what is 'cool' and what isn't. You could always do the 'If you had £100 to spend on a phone, what would you get' question lol
I have the Nokia 610, my teenage daughter has the Nokia 820, she prefers my phone to hers. She's already broken something on hers so she won't ever get an iphone until she can pay for it herself.
Daughter just bought a samsung galaxy fame. £100 on orange at asda payg.......but.......go to carohone warehouse and get them to match it (you just have to get a £10 orange or o2 top up) but best of all you then end up with a network free handset. Thr phone had all the stuff teenagers want and runs the uptodate version of android.
------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
