I loathe them in the house but do give them fair warning of the rent we charge spiders (fabled to rid us of flies, but never actually living up to the myth in any efficient way). I tell them it's £3000.00 per minute to live in our house if you have more than four legs, but that the garden's free. If they don't pay up, it's the magical merry-go-round (Dyson) for them.
My real phobia is frogs and toads. Last time we camped, a baby toad thought it would be a laugh to crawl through our tent. I felt sick...
We always get them in September but this year we had about 3 every evening for a few weeks way back in Spring. I was astounded as they were the same make, huge and fast.
I sprayed all round the skirting board and have not seen one since. Must get the spray out again, but can't promise it was that which deterred them. It is called Spider X from Ebay or Amazon.
Someone at work was telling me about the plug-in things that you can get, mentioned above, but she said when she firsy plugged it in spiders were crawling up the walls from everywhere for the first couple of weeks, then you get no more. I couldn't do with the first two weeks, rather have the odd spider and deal with that!

I've had a couple of the plug-in things plugged in for a couple of years now - one upstairs and one down... We used to get ridiculous numbers of spiders, but since I've had them, even in early autumn, we probably see less than one a week...
Luckily for me, OH doesn't have a problem with them and takes them outside... I on the other hand, have been known to sleep in the spare room because I saw a spider scurry under the bed when I turned on the light!
Just hope the recluce spider doesn't get over here.
They are in Spain and southern France. My late wife was bitten by one. She was hospitalised as the venom sets of a flesh eating bug which takes months to get rid of.
Google it.
------------- live for today as tomorrow ma never come.
My wife also bought one of the plug in things.
Have to say we have had it for about 2 years and it seems to work.We used to get massive spiders but not now.
Very occasionally we will see a very small one which is taken outside if I can get to it before our Border terrier.
