Excellent stuff....just like the good old CB wind ups back in the day...My favourite one was the t**t who called out "19 for a wind up". So I would say "Can't hear you breaker, no modulation"...

When I made the comments about the world of amateur radio being easy to access, I had no intention of kicking of the old cb v ham thing that has been done to death on so many radio forums (And on the air) over a number of years. I came into amateur radio by way of cb as did many others and certainly would never consider a cber to be inferior to anyone else. I have a policy of never responding to any post that is aimed at me in an abusive or sarcastic manner, so, I would therefore like to thank Ken (Quinney G8FSO) and Tony (Willcroft) for their input............Mick G0SRR.

Anyone who says Amateur radio is superior needs do nothing more than have a listen on any of the 2M repeaters around London.
And top Band is the Derby & Joan club of the air, great sleeping pill ZZzzZZzzZzzZzzZzz

I was one of those who demonstrated in favour of CB in the 70's and them took the RAE exam to get my B class licence.
I never bothered with the morse test as even in the 80's everyone knew it was becoming defunct as it eventually did.

I still use CB as well as 10M mobile and will be quite happy to use the new AM and SSB CB modes.

We should have had this 2 years ago when the switch over to Digital TV started but the beligerant Ofcoms agency still had a bee in their bonnet about it and moaned about the MOD having the primary use of the band despite them never having used it for years.

We will get it in April as the consultation is just one way of Ofcom slowing things down.

By the way. All the old AM/SSB rigs will still be illegal as the new frequency rigs will need to be CEPT aproved. Some of them were so bad anyway.

Dont worry ! I lost the will to live following a caravan down a road in Cornwall last year.

Then again, why read a thread you have no interest in?

Touchy these G8's! All that discussing aerials and transcievers I suppose.

I did manage to pass a BTEC in Telecommunications as well as a City and Guilds Radio TV & Electronics so I would obviously have been unable to complete the multi guess RAE.

To the two G8's who replied I never said anything in the original post about CB'ers using VHF and UHF that was a reference to the G8 license which didn't used to allow access to anything lower in frequency than VHF. I'm sorry to hear they now let them loose on HF as well! They can now bore the world on a watt about aerials!

As Jack and John noticed my original post was tongue in cheek! Didn't mean to cause offence so in deference to all G8's out there:-

I'm actually an M0, but managed to trade my M0 for a G8 thanks to someone I know.

Well David, you certainly did stir up the bee pot. I cant comment on the licensing laws in the uk but most of us amateur radio people started in German with the old group 8 or Taxi wireless, old valved Bosch things with 6 channels, 6 watt RF AM on the 11 meter band. It was there that I got interested in the other bands, but I can remember getting an ex military RF meter with 50 ohms load, and tuning the final drives to over the limit. We used to change the RF amp transistor to a Japanese 30 Watt type and tune to max. I have seen the legs glow on pressing the PTT button on the mike, on one of the rigs that we where messing around with. But David, you know as a radio tech what happens to the bandwidth on AM, it goes very wide and to be heard at 50 MHz and the 3rd harmonic even louder on the 80 MHz . As you can see I am against the freeing of AM and SSB on 27 MHz band, the temptation to fiddle with the circuits to gain more power is to great.

I made the German amateur radio exam on the 4th march 1979 and the big licence in 1981. It was a 4 part exam with CW, the technical part being the worst. For practical part I built a quartz oven to stabilise quartz oscillators. I then got the call sign DD5DJ.

Sorry about all the tech bits for those who are not technically minded, but I had to explain just why I am against it.

Mike (DD5DJ)

The reason the UK Government at the time did not want CB was, and this is actually written down in Hansard somewhere was, if people can communicate that easily there will be a revolution !

Im a G6 and started on pirate CB with an ancient 13 channel US rig. I was also active in the the protest movement to get CB for the UK.
I got my RAE pass 2 years after CB was legalised but even now still use CB as well as the 10M amateur band
People on CB are relatively 'normal' compared to some of the tech freaks on some of the amateur bands.
I welcome the AM and SSB legalisation
