My cat still brings dead birds and mice, at 13 years old I thought he would have stopped now.

Mmm. Mine is 12 and I was thinking the same thing. No such luck. He doesn't catch that much these days, but he is still an active hunter. Latest "gifts" include a large brown rat deposited in the dining room, and a headless pigeon that he was unable to wrestle through the catflap, so my girlfriend nearly trod in it when going out into the garden.

I wish mine would bring home useful inanimate objects. I just get live presents.

So far the worst was a live magpie. They are VERY loud and pointy when in a kitchen they don't want to be in! He was only 7 months old at the time, so I've no idea how he did it, or how he got it in the cat flap.

Usually we get mice, I don't mind them, but they are VERY fast, and have a tendency to go under the fridge while I'm trying to rescue them.

We did have a cat that did rabbits. I think his record was 5 in one day. He eventually moved out to the farm behind us, and although I really missed him, I was a bit relieved!

I will never forget the time my cat Fluff dumped a dead rat on my pillow at 2am. Only problem being that it wasn't for me, it was for her beloved Richard, who happened to be on nights. Well if looks could kill, when she discoved it was me, then I would be well mouldy by now. What's worse is that I didn't save it for him, but threw it out.

Since we moved my current two are now indoor cats. Bilbo isn't that bothered, as going outside requires energy. Charlie isn't over happy, but is getting used to the idea.

Since I found a mouse/present squashed under the bathmat (true Tom and Jerry style) our cats have been shut downstairs overnight.

When our stray Supermog turned up, he'd been living wild - mended injuries consistent with being thrown out of a car, rather than run over - on what he could get. Cleaned up, de-tangled and thoroughly checked over (one vet never got over his attacks and refused to treat him), he spent just over two happy years with us and only brought back live food. Plenty of voles (ouch who repaid our rescue efforts with needle-sharp teeth!); baby rabbits and on one glorious occasion a fully grown and extremely fat wood pigeon that promptly and plentifully decorated our parquet floor! Still think that the blood loss we suffered from his gifts and his bad temper when we released them was worth it. Don't know why he didn't kill - maybe it was a raw beef, chicken and lamb, the butcher use to give me to feed him as Supermog wouldn't eat cat food!

one stray cat that my parents took in brought his friend.   Mum had been feeding a stray, who was gradually moving in. We had called him Mr Outside, because that was were he was living - till he moved in. Them my mum noticed a white cat lurking in the bushes next door but one - this cat slowly became braver and came for food.
One day I saw the orginal cat with the other cat, curled up together.   We eventually caught this poor white and tabby thing, bathed her filthy coat, and a couple of weeks later had built up enough trust to take her to the vet.   She was an old cat who had had a very hard life. Lived the last few years in comfort.
Another cat, who sussed out my parents as a soft touch, brought her kitten. I took mum and kitten - it was mum who brought me, or should I say Richard, the dead rat.

Jade, he sounds fabulous!!

I have heard that they bring us live presents because they're trying to teach us to hunt. They think we are so rubbish at it, that we need help, like a mummy cat teaching her young.

Not sure if this is true, I think my cat just brings them home live because it's more fun to play with them inside than outside in the rain!

Hi RachIN76. Based upon my own experiences with one of my cats and his extremely eclectic tastes in all foods and with a special liking of cooked left-over chicken and other such human likings in our varied diets including the last dribbles of soups;I would propose that they bring back live items for us their faithful servants to cook for them.
