Very difficult situation. Presence of RAF planes could have made the passenger jet's flight crew edgy. If, at worst, the RAF jets did not shoot it down, what else could they achieve? Shooting down might be an option in trigger-happy America, but I think that cold-blooded approach here would seriously incense UK people. I also think RAF fighter pilots would consider this a step too far and very likely disobey such a command - I think I would!
