XVI yes?

As well is two words!

Quite excited! The local SSPCA have kittens, but I couldn't go down today (not too well). So, I said I could phone in the morning to see if they still have any and I'll go. Also, Cats Protection are coming on Friday to do a home visit as they have kittens just now too.

So, I'm going to stick with them just now. I was nervous about Gumtree etc. Thanks for your advice everyone and I'll keep you posted!

Oh - how on earth do you put photos on here??

Hi Weemack, ask the mods for my email address and i will show you how to put pictures on here..

I think they do - what happened was, I went on the Cats Protection Website and you're directed to an "Adopt a Cat" page. The only branch who had kittens, were Cumnock and Doon Valley. So I just filled in an enquiry form and then got a phone call yesterday from them. Cumnock and Doon valley foster their cats and kittens. They're doing a home-check for me on Friday, so I'm assuming they're doing that to offer me kittens! However, I'll double check the Ayr centre. I'm just back from the SSPCA in Mainholm near Ayr and saw gorgeous kittens. However, I was only allowed to "register interest" today and fill out a form. The girl there didn't really have much info for me about them. There were 6 kittens, 2 of which were quite sleepy looking. It's always sensible to ask why certain ones are more quiet than others. So I did and she just looked at me and said "yeah, they do that sometimes"! Lol I think she was young and new and didn't have much of a clue really. They all looked healthy and had just eaten, so perhaps they were just full-up and tired.

I'll get a phone call tomorrow from them as I'm not the only person to register interest. I could have taken them all!!

Yay! Cats Protection came out to see me and they were lovely ladies. There are 3 litters just now - one ready for rehoming, one ready in 2 weeks or so and then another about to be born.

The litter that is ready now were only discovered by a member of the public when the kittens were about 4 weeks, so they're quite afraid of people. We might give this litter a miss. However, they are being handled as much as possible, so they still may be a possibility.

We passed our home check, so can basically have our pick of 2 kittens and we'll be able to visit them over the next week (or later, depending on the litter we go for). They're all in foster homes around kids, dogs, hoovers etc so I think this is the best way to go. I'm excited now!

We got our current cat from the Animal Welfare Section at our local authority. She came from a couple who were moving and couldn't take her with them and, to be honest, she has a lovely personality. Not all local authorities have Animal Welfare sections but it may be worth while contacting them.

Glad you found a rescue kitten.

I was in a similar position re getting a dog 2 years ago.

I needed to have a dog that would be good with children and had long hair or was non shedding as I'm allergic to short animal fur. Nothing suitable was coming up despite a lot od searching.

We were then offered my little monster as a family know to a friend were rehoming her due to "not getting on with their older dog"

We ended up taking on the scruffiest, naughtiest dog ever. She had massive house training issues, needed clipping down to bald due to matting, had an ear infection that required surgery, food allergies and was unspayed.

First 2 weeks she cost us £350 in vet bills, £50 in grooming care. Spay cost £100 plus extras as she was seriously ill afterwards.

Had we gone for a dog from a rescue we wouldn't have faced such massive bills and a dog who was terrified of other dogs, cars.

My advice would be wait for a rescue.

Must add though after 2 years work she is becoming absolutely amazing and I wouldn't part with her for the world.

Enjoy your new kitten/ kittens xxx

madz - what an amazing thing you've done for that dog. You've given her love and a stable home - what a big commitment and it's obviously paid off!

I've just heard from Cats Protection and one of the volunteer's rescue cats, which came in pregnant, has had 7 kittens!! So, we're going to pick 2 from that litter. I'm happy to wait the 8-9 weeks, because I know she will handle them a lot and they'll be very used to family life. x
