We used to have a Dyson years ago when they first came out, back then it was the DC04...

But we stopped using it and went back to 'bagged' vacs as when you were hoovering with it in the front rooms in the blazing sunshine (both south facing), you could see it spitting the fine dust back out the vents !

Exactly what we found. That DC04 was the worst vacuum cleaner we have ever owned. We ditched it for a Miele 'Cat & Dog' which is brilliant and does the job in half the time. Now, of course, is too powerful to be sold.

I've had 3 dysons and said I wouldn't have anything else until my son and husband ruined my last one using it to unblock the tumble dryer hose, leaving it with a nasty damp smell! I couldnt' afford a new one so got a Vax Air reach for £99 instead. While it's not got the build quality of the Dyson and using the attachments means unclipping the hose and attaching the handle rather than just pulling up the handle of my Dyson it has just as good suction. It is very light and great for using on the stairs as the hose is longer and for carrying upstairs. It doesn't corner very well, I think because the wheels on the back are so close together and because it's light and has good suction it gives your arms a workout pushing it round the carpet! For less than half the price with a 6 year warranty, I have to say i'm impressed.

Amazed at how many throw things away these days. Dysons are pretty easy to get parts for even back to early models.

We also have a Gtech rehargeable sweeper for hard floors which is great and again all parts can be replaced if required

Mine hasn't been thrown out, just not used very often / for the car etc. I've only just got rid of the first one. My reasoning for going with a new vacuum cleaner was because it needed a new hose, filters and brush bar, which would have cost a fair bit. It's easier to get a new one.

We have a Dyson DC02.My wife had it before we met,14yrs ago, it has hoovered up 8yrs worth of building debris and is a bit battle scarred. The flap holding the tools has broken off, the one wheel is missing and the on/off switch is jammed in the on position meaning you have to stop it at the socket but I stuck two new filters in it this week at a cost of £2.99 (inc postage) off Ebay and it is back to trying to suck the tiles off the floor. I don't think I would replace it with a more modern Dyson though, our local tip always seems to have a selection in when ever I go.

Thats my point though Phil - people throw away stuff that can be cheaply repaired same as you did, so you probably could get a nice newer Dyson for peanuts that wouldn't require much work to fix up, ebay is great for Dyson spares

My Dad recently gave his old dyson to my daughter, it was about 8yrs old, and still working well, its only sin being the sheer weight and bulkyness of it being an upright model. He has now replaced it with one of the lighter rechargable models and is very pleased with it, no trailing cables, and its easy to empty and no bags to change or replace, although l dont think one would cope with builders rubble or heavy shedding pet hair like my Henry does, but for just general crumbs and dust ect, its great, and im tempted to buy one myself for doing a quick clean up after the grandkids have been ect.
