I would agree with Graham about faddy diets...a waste of time and effort.

The reason I have found SW to be successful for me is because the group meetings are a big help and the "diet" plan itself is essentially just a healthy eating plan - you eat plenty of fruit and veg, lean meat and very little fat.

I would like to be able to exercise more but arthritis means I can hardly walk at all some days. I'm looking into going swimming instead as I think this would be good exercise that doesn't put so much strain on my knees!!

I have just put on weight through eating toouch of the wrong stuff and a lack of exercise. Now I've had keyhole surgery to repair my knee I can start to exercise again.
Eating less now and a few bikes rides and it will soon fall off. No faddy diets or syns etc just burning more than I take in.

I really struggle with my mobility and ability to exercise, I have arthritis of my spine, plus other things. Some days I only walk 200 steps all day and thats just bathroom etc. However I have found the fitbit really useful on my better days I just push a bit more and walk a bit extra even if its 100 more steps that's an improvement, I have also been able to relate my previous days activities to bad days and look at patterns (I didn't think there were any before).

The sleep monitoring has also been a massive help as with my pain I often only sleep 3 hours so I have had better explanations as to why I have felt so rough. It tells me how often I'm awake or restless in that time.

I totally agree about faddy diets and I think slimming world still falls into that category, it promises unlimited eating of certain things and stretches your appetite. I actually gained on it because I was already eating low fat, healthy eating and the free foods like muller yogurts were full of sugar. Most of my friends who have done sliming world and weight watchers gain the weight back, I think this is due to the idea its a diet and temporary, not a life style change.

Using Myfitness pal I can tailor what my activity and needs are, no faddy eating I just eat healthily and well. If I want chocolate I have chocolate. If I'm on a rough day movement wise and can't cook I can balance what I eat around the foods I can manage to prepare.

The biggest thing for me was making sure I accurately recorded and weighed things.

The very last line of the above post by Madz, is the key.

Be honest in what you put onto my fitness pal. When you start to think about the calories in those snacks you soon notice how much thy add up..

On the question of exercise, just do what you are able, anything is better than nothing at all.

I lost2 1/2 stones with sw. It is lower in fat, sugar & carbs, but you fill up on meat, veg, no fat dairy & pulse beans. The mushy pea curry is lush!

I've lost nearly 3 stone with SW too - I love it. It is a lifestyle choice, you do need to sort of 'stick with it', but once you become a target member you can attend group for no charge providing you're within 3lb either side of your target weight (you decide your target weight - they don't decide it for you).

It's more about knowledge is power - it's helped me equate what I like to eat with what I'd just stuff in my mouth because it was there! An example of this is mince pies (particularly so because I was thinking more about my weight around Christmas, now less so!). A mince pie has the same amount of syns as a glass of wine... I don't even particularly like mince pies, but people bring them into work and I would have eaten my way through plenty normally, I obviously didn't bother last Christmas.

It's worked for me, but appreciate it's not everyones cup of tea xx

So basically SW is just calorie counting but calling it syns instead.
May as well get the myfitnesspal app for free.

Calories in calories out nothing new there.

No, not calories counting - we don't count calories.

There are 'free foods' that you can eat, i.e. lean meat, eggs, potatoes, rice, pasta

There are then 'speed foods' fruit and vegetables (not all though).

The idea is that each meal is made up of at least 1/3 speed food.

The 'syns' are used for your treats, or if you'd rather use oil rather than frylight when cooking, etc.

As I say, I understand that not everyone will like it, but it has worked for me. I now eat lots of fruit and veg and think about what I'm eating. Personally if I were just calorie counting, it wouldn't have worked because I'd still be eating a lot of rubbish, whereas I know the food I consume now is much healthier than it used to be.

I had breast cancer for the 2nd time just before Christmas and when I visited the surgeon after my op he said I had to loose weight. I waited until after my radiotherapy at the end of April and joined Slimming World. My SIL lost 4 stone with them and has kept it off so I thought I would give it a go.

I go to my class on a Wednesday and up to last week I have lost a stone - 3 more to go. I anticipate this will take a year as I want to do it slowly.

Having tried diets in the past this really suits me. I know from previous experience that I need the discipline of a group. I am so shocked that I never feel hungry as you fill up on 'free foods'.

I have always cooked from scratch but I now use healthy alternatives.

We were given a voucher to use at Iceland where you can buy some frozen S/W meals.

Each to their own - what works for 1 may not for someone else but I knew I had to do something.

Several people have been sent to the group by their doctor or the hospital and receive vouchers for the 1st 10 weeks.

I do feel healthier and am sleeping better as well.

I lost over a stone with SW but hated the 'Happy Clappy' part where everyone in the class was given a clap individually.
I stopped going and soon put the stone back plus an extra seven pounds.

Dieted on and off for 40 years! calorie counting is the answer. Use less than you put in, you get fat, put less in than you use, you get slim, Simples!!

I have been doing Slimmming World now for just over a year and have lost just under 5 stone. I love it found it so easy to do and wouldnt say I have ever felt deprived I've not really got a sweet tooth I did like a bottle of wine or two which I still have occassionally but in moderation and I now drink it with soda water. The website has some fabulous recipes which all the family can enjoy and also the recipe books are excellent too. I always stay to group as the ideas, motivation and support you receive is invaluable.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey so far and Im not at my target weight.

Give it a go I say - dont knock it till you try it and what works for some doesnt work for others.

I did the F Plan diet a few years ago. I really found it easy and I lost quite a bit of weight.
