I agree Brian, the surgeon was probably the same one who worked for the NHS, but the place itself was in a more rural setting, without any of the parking problems for visitors that the old Derbyshire Royal Infirmary had, and all patients got their own private en-suite room with views out over the gardens, not of a building demolision site, and a much better quality menu to choose from than the frozen microwave meals the NHS hospitals were serving up at the time.
We were very suprised when Dad got offered this option on the NHS, we later found out it was a deal beneficial to both Bupa and the NHS, Bupa filled the beds and rooms that would otherwise stood empty and recieved the going NHS rate for each operation and aftercare, so atl east they covered their costs, the Patents that used these rooms got a far better standard of 'Hotel services' during their stay, and did not suffer from a lower standard of care due to staff shortages and cutbacks. There was a high dependancy suite/itu available at this hospital, and a lady admitted the same day as Dad on this scheme did need to use it for a few days post op, before being transfered to the main wards.
The Nhs benefited from using this scheme in that it kept its waiting lists down, and enabled it to continue to offer orthopaedic services whist its old suite was being demolished, and the two main Derby hospitals developed into one, with the resulting 'Super hospital' which is now the feature of the ltv documentry being shown on Thursday nights.
The Nuffield Bupa Nhs scheme finished as soon as the new othopaedic suite and theatres opened on the new site, and im pleased to say that the frozen ready meals were scrapped as soon as they moved from the old DRI London road site.
The new hospital is not without its problems, its a maze for any newcomer to have to find their way around, and there are those whos antisocial behaviour make it a nightmare on occasions for staff and patients alike. My Dad is rather 'old School' at times, and not always politically correct in his speach and what he comes out with, at 87, hes unlightly to change his ways, no matter how you try to reason with him. It would be a nighmare for all concerned if he had to share his room with someone who was not a clear English speaker, or indeed one who prefared his English peppered with a fair share of 'F' and 'B' words that simply were not part of his vocabulary in his younger days, he wouldnt think twice before he raised his voice a gave them a good ticking off!
And despite his age, he can still be ' one for the ladies' to the point that his intended charm can be rather embarrasing at times, l never forget the time he asked an Asda shop assistant if she would mind helping him try on some new underwear for size in the changing rooms of the clothing department, the old devil him!

Yes Brian, our new local hospital is the one shown on the Superhospital ITV programme, although not so 'Local' to me as its a 30 mile round trip to attend, the same distance as the nearest Nuffield hospital is, although l have only ever been there once to see a consultant out of despiration, after the NHS guy l was allocated failed to diagnose and treat a problem that was causing me to be severly anaemic.
The Nuffield guy then transfered me back to the NHS under his care, and l had my surgery on the NHS 6wks later, and made a full recovery afterwards. Sadly the surgeon who had originally discharged me without appropiate treatment, had to stand down from his post soon afterwards, and has since died.
I suppose my Dad had the best of both worlds, as he was still officially an nhs patient occupying a private patient bed blocked booked for nhs use, so all his aftercare, homecheck and follow up, physio ect was via the NHS the same as everyone else. He is also lucky enough to live within the catchment area for the newly built St Oswalds community hospital, which holds regular outpatient clinics, has a couple of wards for rehab and Elderly care, and saves the people of the Derbyshire Dales the very long Journey down into the city, it doesnt however have the facilities to do any kind of major surgery or in depth diagnostics needing the expensive scanning MRI machines ect.
