I have family who live on the backwaters of the Norfolk and Suffolk broads, and they were telling us about people who wild camp along the waterways by small boat, often stopping off at fishing marks trampled down into the banks by the Anglers that use them. Not only do these people leave behind rubbish from their food and drink packages, they leave smoldering disposable bbqs behind that can, and often do start a grass fire along the banks of the waterway, which has been known to spread to nearby crops and propperties. The same culprits also leave human excrement with used toilet paper wads with the rest of their rubbish making it very unpleasent indeed for anyone who happens to step into this as they are coming in to moor with their boat.

For years on the Mull Rally (closed public roads), there were an amazing number of people who would walk miles loaded with carry-outs, yet leave the empties behind for others to clear out. A few years back a VERY strong message was made about litter and popular viewing points provided with additional bin bags; very little litter is left lying around now. Last year, we had one set of known culprits - they have not been invited back to the island this year.

It is possible to turn things round without massive bye-laws. However that does mean that all of us have to do our bit. OK, not easy when confronted with a load of drunken eejits but you can still report it to pollis or local council or the site warden/owner of where you're staying.

OK, I'm probably paranoid about litter - started when I was in garden with dog as a kid and some people walking past our house to the static caravan site chucked a bottle over our fence - broke on our path and dog was scarred for life. Their van was off the site a week later, no refund of rental and they had a fine to pay when it went to court.

Feeblecat, there's already a FB page called Glen Etive the dirty truth. The mess is an ongoing problem.

Thanks
Yes, the woman I was speaking to late in the cafe told me but it was too late to take a photo by then. Wish I had, but like I said I dont think naming and shaming the twits would make a difference to them. Some people just have no pride or respect.

I was recently at La Roque sur Ceze and there was a group of French lads with about a dozen beer bottles and rubbish around where they were sitting.

When they got up to leave each and every one of them picked up their litter and put it in the bin.

I was quite impressed.

We just returned from a weekend at Charity farm near Wigan, the site is great and a review will be left when I have a bit more time.

Sadly there are some dirty b at at at ards out there who have no respect for anyone else, they feel the need to smear excrement on the walls of the toilets and all over the seats, not once but twice at least. Disgusting and spoil everyone’s holidays. Not content with that, they feel the need to turn off the isolator valves on the toilets so that nobody else can flush the toilets.

It has to be said though, the the site were VERY apologetic, and VERY quick to clean up the mess.

The annoying thing is that someone tried to justify this poor behaviour by saying it was probably kids.... sorry this does not in any way excuse or justify the mess. If it was kids, then what kind of parent brings there child up to think that this is acceptable??

Well done charity farm, you did a great job. even though it was a job you shouldn’t have had to do!!

I just want to thank ficklejade for speaking up. Too many of us don't want to get involved in case it all escalates (thinking of that poor elderly gentleman stabbed to death recently after a minor car incident). My theory is that litter breeds, and if we can we will clear up a beauty spot that's been left marred. My own bugbear, as a responsible dog owner, is the unacceptable habit of throwing the poo bag onto a branch by the path where it hangs, and other idiots think it's funny & do the same rather than carry it to the nearest bin.

I smoke and have a dog but I hate finding fag ends and dog crap on a pitch.
On site I have a butt bucket for smoking. Out and about the bags are used for the dog and both cigarette and dog bags are disposed in a bin. When up the hills, I field strip the cig and carry all rubbish back down.
Orange peel as well. Seems to never degrade. That and empty army ration tins in parts of the highlands

Thank you, Fiona. I very much agree that one has to watch for one's safety if one's going to say something. My tactic if seeing someone drop litter in the street is to pick it up and say, excuse me, you've dropped this. Most people react well but you'll always get the odd one or two who don't give a monkey's. Some you have to give up with good grace but often I find others will be attracted by their shouting/swearing at you and back you up.

I know everyone's talking about poop bags up trees - can honestly say I've never seen that here.

After the opening ceremony at the Seoul Olympics, there were SEVEN plastic bags full of rubbish left in the stadium.

I have seen just one family in Britain leave more than this

Most puzzling thing left at a campsite bin area? a full sized unbroken convector heater. Our council has good recycling facilities and where we were camping does not, so we took it home. As it still worked, it's kept the conservatory frost free. But it must be a pain for sites when folk bring something big with them but don't take it away.
