I bought a computer in PC World a few months ago. I was told it was the display model so it was reduced. When I got it home and booted up it had loads of someone else's photos and emails on it. I took it back for a refund and got a better one cheaper at John Lewis.

Nothing cheeky about offering to do something for a fee which could otherwise be done free of charge.

Many businesses make a perfectly honourable living out of doing just such things ... And many customers are happy to pay if it saves them a little hassle.

My own experience of PC world is that they want to sell you what they get the most commission on. I am no computer genius but asked a few basic questions and the assistant was clueless. She went ape when I checked John Lewis on-line and asked if they had the same models. Nearly all the ones she was trying to sell us were old models. My only other visit was for an external hard drive and the assistants were not interested, obvioulsy not enough commission. I got a vague "over there". Fortunately there is a Maplins on the same retail park who give great advice.
I feel sorry for the staff if they have to rely on commission for the bulk of their pay.

I agree Maplins do know what they are talking about and do give great advice. We were having problems with our wifi signal booster, wandered into Maplins (originally purchased from them after receiving excellent advice on the subject from them initially), young guy knew immediately what the problem was and showed us the pairing button on the receiving unit (we hadn't even spotted there was a button as it was underneath the unit) - the 2 units should automatically pair but there's a pairing button just in case but hadn't previously needed to use it. Apparently after we had needed to switch off the BT unit and switch it back on again when TV wouldn't see the wifi network, after doing so we should have re-paired the transmitter and receiver/booster. So, we did that, re-paired the 2 units & hey presto, problem solved at no cost.
