Is the Gower peninsula (near Swansea) too far Bob? it's lovely there and an easy drive once you are on the M4, but you do have to pay to be let in over the Severn Bridge. We are going there next week.

About an hour too far, Mrs Bonce. I could just about make Newport

I lost the sight in one eye about 4 years ago and my maximum drive before the other eye starts complaining is 2 hours. Comfortably I generally hope to find places within an hour and a half's drive, which would get me as far as somewhere like Ross on Wye and down to the south coast...been there though

If you can get to Newport, you should be able to make it to Abergavenny? It's lovely around there too although not on the coast of course. There is a nice site just outside the town called Blossom Touring Park, I think it takes tents.

And a very fine place to be, at any time!

Whereabouts are you staying? I may be able to point you in the direction of a good pub or 3.

That's a shame. Would even south Wales be too far? We had a lovely 10 days in the Gower a few years ago, and the journey was remarkably quick. It's motorway almost all the way once you get to the M4.

Well to be honest it's not just the eye problems although two hours is a strain because I have to be doubly alert to everything around me which takes a lot of head turning, but I simply don't enjoy driving any more. I have thought about travelling a bit further and taking a break and I may end up doing that but once I am on the road I like to keep going until I get there...much to the frustrations of people who have travelled with me in the past - lol.

At the moment I am looking at sites around Minchinhampton which is an area of Gloucestershire I have not been to before...about 1.5 hours from me.

Not necessarily.

I tent camp in Norfolk in September (going again in a couple of weeks) and for the last several years it's been nicer and warmer than earlier in the summer. I live in cycling shorts, strappy tops and beach sandals for ten days and come back with a tan that looks like I've spent a month in the Med.

I think they call that rust.

Ha ha

Well when I get back I'll post some pics of the beautiful weather I will no doubt have while I'm there

Don't forget the pics of the cycling shorts, strappy tops and beach sandals too TM ;)

The Red Lion at Hooe and the Lamb at Wartling are both lovely country pubs that do good food and were dog friendly last time I was there. The Red Lion has a nice garden, too, iirc. The pub right by the castle at Pevensey is pleasant and owners very friendly. The dog can stretch his/her legs in the castle grounds as you walk across to Pevensey village.

I don't really know that area for walking, as we tend to walk on the downs or in the Ashdown Forest. A favourite of ours is just a couple of miles the other side of Polegate (20 minute drive from Pevensey).

We park near the Cricketers pub in Berwick, just south of the A27, walk up to the top of the downs, head west along the ridge for a mile or two, then down into Alciston village (very pretty, thatched cottages). We have a quick refresher at the Rose Cottage, then take the footpath more or less opposite the pub and go back to Berwick across the fields, by which time we're hungry and eat at the Cricketers. You get lovely views on the outward walk and the return leg is level and easy. The Cricketers used to be 3 flint cottages and is very pretty, with a cottage style garden and the beer in barrels behind the bar, no cellar.

If you've never been to Lewes, it's worth a visit and is a very dog-friendly town. Has some pretentious over-priced cafes though!

Staying at California just north of Yarmouth. The camping field is on the cliff top with direct access to the beach - I gained another dog a couple of months ago so I'm looking forward to taking him for morning walks along the sand with my other two.
