I have had lower back pain on and off for years. I have been seeing a Chiropractor since last June. She helps with the pain short term but says its my core muscles that are weak not a trapped nerve and has recommended pilates and has also given me exercises to help alleviate the pain. I also take naproxen and paracetamol when its bad and that also helps. Also an ice pack on your lower back is good.

I would recommend Pilates - but you need to make sure that the instructors are fully qualified and its a small class - some of the movements are quite subtle.

You need to practice at least 3 times a week but it'll make a huge difference.

I think Pilates and yoga should be free on the nhs - would save a fortune in the long run!

I have also had many issues with my back over the years and used to see an osteopath regularly. Reading this is making me wonder if I should revisit the idea, as I stopped going because I didn't feel it was really doing anything. But perhaps I just didnt find the right needle in the haystack...

Some very interesting replies thanks, I will be putting your advise into practice. I am a great believer in that your body is the best healer.

My discomfort is more at the top of my spine and neck. I think it is a mixture of bad posture and tension. I am ensuring that I sit correctly, I have changed my pillow for a single memory foam(I used to sleep with 2) I am not in pain but it feels uncomfortable so not taking any pain killers. I am going to try some exercises. I am hoping to book a massage.

I am very wary of anything that may cause more problems with my back.

Just a quick update to how I have gone on. I opted not to see anyone about my back. Instead I have been careful with my sitting and posture. I am off work at the moment due to school holidays so I am not sat at my desk all day, I have found the pain is going and I feel much better. I have just been away for a week and the bed I slept on was very firm. I never noticed any pins and needles all week and I felt great. Been home a week and noticed odd twinges, so I have ordered an orthopedic mattress and its being delivered today. I am now sure my mattress has not helped with my back. I would like to thank everyone for their help especial Steve I think you hit the nail on the head with the posture.

After 3 months of nhs physio, including having my neck stretched with weights over the end of the bed ( in the consultation room- obviously), I had no relief for my arm pain and weakness. I was discharged as they only treat for 3 months. I found an osteopath nearby who after the first visit I couldn't believe the difference. I could feel and grip again, and the stiffness in my neck eased. So yes - find a good osteopath.

Glad to hear that travel bug , I also remember changing my mattress a good few times before finding the right one for me , a not to firm pocket sprung one , baby bears I think it was , not to firm and not to soft , with no lumps as your likely to get with the big sprung ones .
Remember to keep up with the good work on the posture side of things .

Try this method for your back problem:-

Use an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes,
20 minutes off,
ice pack again for 20 minutes.
When finished, curl yourself up tightly into the foetal position and crunch as hard as you can. You may hear something click, but it works for some.

I had a twisted pelvis years ago. I crawled into the Chiros' practice. 30 minutes later i danced out. Less than a week later i was pall-bearing at a funeral - and not a twinge. It was like witchcraft. I've been back a few times since to get a 'fine tuning' once twinges have actually recurred . Its been the epitome of 'money well spent' for me.
I dont know what the difference is between Chiros' and Osteos', but i do know this particular Chiro knows what shes doing.

A surgeon in the USA once operated on the wrong vertebra so didn't do anything that would have cured the patient, but the patient was totally 'cured' when he recovered. He now does placebo procedures where people get better without surgery because they think they have had something done.

brilliant news Pendywooley.......... The trouble is finding a good Osteopath.
There is by the way a truly excellent one in Machynlleth who goes by the name of Marjorie Taylor, but the best one we have ever discovered lives in France and practices in Perigueux.

I'm seeing a chiropractor at the moment for back spasm. They use a combination of acupuncture and munipulation. I've just had my fourth session and the jury is still out... Waiting to see my GP again on Thursday for another examination.

In the meantime they one thing I find really helps is Purestretch - I believe it's a fairly new craze but there do seem to be plenty of classes nationwide.

I have just about come to terms that my camping season is over before it really got started ☹️

An old neighbour of mine was suffering like yourself. The only place he cou;ld get comfortable was sitting on the window sill outside his house. He went to the chiropractor and came out almost dancing. Two weeks of over-doing it and was buried shortly afterwards. It could have been his body's only way of telling him to slow down.

My neck has improved loads but ended up with some muscle spasms a few month ago so had to go to the doctors. Sorted out the spasms with ibuprofen but he refereed me for physio. I went this week for my first appointment he says my posture is wrong and I am very unsupple for my age. I have exercises to and go back in 3 wks time. The pins and needles in hands and feet he says are not trapped nerves so I will have to go back to doctors to try to find out what is wrong.

An update for the OP.

At our local Gym there are 3 of us with a bad back and lower back pain and we think we've got the solution. Have a look on You Tube for Hip Flexor execises. They've done the trick for us - all over 60yrs old - and there is no pain or effort involved in the exercise.

I'm just back from a couple of days in Norfolk and the landlady of the digs was suffering the same problem. I told her what to do and the next morning she was pain free, and having just spent a fortune on a chiropractor, having acupuncture and manipulation, she was amazed by the results of the simple exercise.

TRY IT!!!
