I have to agree with it being a very bad idea.
My pup was due to be picked up just before i went away so i collected her late when i returned because not only did i think it would be a bad idea to collect a new pup then take it away my breeder also thought so and said no way would i be able to collect before. No good breeder would allow this.
Taking a new pup home is a major event in their lives so they need quite a few weeks at home before changing their routine.
Sounds easy taking a pup away and not letting it go down but your holiday will be ruined as you're going to be very confined.
Speak to the breeder any good breeder will keep a pup until suitable for the pup to leave.

1,000,000% agree with this excellent post, for gauds sake PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR PUP ON HOLIDAY WITH YOU.

Sorry, but I have to agree with others that this is a very bad idea. You say you can't delay collecting the pup so is it possible you can delay your holiday until he has settled in with his new family and completed his injections?

Personally though, if delaying the holiday isn't an option I'd speak to the breeder - if she's decent and cares what happens to her pups she should be willing to hold onto him for a week or two longer.

Hi Feeblecat,

I think, take him just be as careful as possible.

I got a new pup last year Albert (border terrier), before all his injections had kicked in we used to walk him on the beach, immediately after the tide had gone out before any other dogs had been there, the vet also said he could be with other dogs as long as we were sure they were up to date with all their own injections.

You cannot wrap them up in cotton wool, just be sensible, after all they are dogs and will happily eat poo given the chance.

By the time my pup was 12 weeks old he had been camping in Wales and had been to the Isle of Man TT's, loved it all.

Picking up a friend for him next week, Albert's sister has had a litter, so the pup will be his nephew, he will be uncle Albert.

We are calling him Frank!

Frank and Albert.

We took both of ours away before they had all of their injections, the vet said just be careful what other dogs they mix with.

At the end of the day they are animals they don;t have injections in the wild and survive, Glen is part of the family so take him with you he'll love it, if he's tired on your walks pick him up excuse for a cuddle and rest his legs.

I spoke with the vet. He said there is no reason not to take him as long as sensible precautions are taken. Vet also said that Glen can mix with other dogs who have been vaccinated, which in our case will be most of the other seasonal's dogs - not strangers camping. Vet stressed the need for socialisation so for areas he can't walk we will carry him.

By the time we go Glen will have been home with us for 11 days. He is already well settled in. We have a big back garden that he has spent loads of time in as well as the house and is well used to all sorts of noises. He is already used to his crate and goes to it without prompting. He doesn't whimper at night - settles well and is taken out for wee once between 11 pm and 6 am when we get up. Regarding the holiday:

We have a decent sized caravan and awning for him to run around.

We have plenty of toys to take with us to stimulate him.

We have no intention of taking the dog walking - we're not daft - but my original question was about the possibility of us walking and taking him with us in a carrier - not feasible so we won't do that as I already said.

We have a grassy area behind our van where other dogs don't go - I know that because we have been the only ones pitched there for 3 years - so more space for Glen to romp.

His routine at home will be kept at the caravan including his crate time, feeding time and sleep time.

Thanks for all your input, I do appreciate the advice. But we are responsible dog owners as anyone who has been familiar with our care of Mack will attest. But, our caravan is a very big part of our lives, it is not an occasional thing, so it is important that Glen gets used to it as soon as possible, including the travelling. We have had him out in the car every night, each journey getting longer, and he already settles quickly.

If you are staying near a beach, take him on it when the tide is on the way out on the waterline on a long lead, but carry him to and from the sea as the wet stuff is essentially freshly washed and as safe as your garden and you can see that no other dogs or foxes have been there before you

He's very cute. I carried Dido everywhere when we first got her to get her used to sights and sounds in the areas we would eventually walk her. Puppies need very little exercise anyway, so as long as he's somewhere to go to the toilet, it's unlikely he's going to be walking very much or very far - we were advised 5 minutes exercise per month of age, which included her doing zoomies around the lounge!
