I would use an independent, LR main dealers probablly more intersted in selling very expensive new ones!
Labour charges way too high.
When I had my classic Rangie I took it to an independent for jobs I could not do myself.
P38s can be troublesome.

Thanks for replies and everyone`s help. Have heard that the P38`s are troublesome, wish we had know that 2 years ago. We have the number of someone in the area going to give them a ring.

Look on Landrover net they have forums for the different models. I found them very useful when I had my old LRS!

don't buy a landrover if you don't have a decent tool box and know how to use the contents of it!

Trouble is the P38 has lots of electonics on it, body ecu,air suspension and engine.
Series 3 and classic rangie I owned needed a big hammer and lots of spanners! ( Plus a fair bit of welding!) Quite enjoyed it though!

I've not got a Range Rover but a 2005 Freelander and have been lucky enough to find a local independent - I am NOT paying main dealer prices for labour. I have checked relevant LR forums for the odd issues I've had; they can be conflicting though. A mate has a P38 and has had something similar to your problem - she's away until after next w/end though and I don't think she'll be able to get an email.
If you have a local LR group, perhaps worth asking them?

So what's the plan then Travel? Are you going to invest what it takes in this car to make it reliable or out it?

I used to have a P38 diesel for 3 yr until a year gone May.

It was a nice car when it was on the road but took a lot keeping it there and a lot of new tools bought.

Have a look on Landyzone, there are quite a few owners that have bought the diagnostics equipment themselves (around £300) and are knowledgeable on them.

I still have the suspension reset/ diagnostics tool and the equipment to check and reset the injection pump.

Got rid of mine when both the turbo and the auto box started going wrong, one of them would have been fixable but both together was not worth keeping.

We have previously had 3 Discovery`s and currently have a 1972 Defender and been ok apart from welding. Oh is no expert but we have been able to maintain them for reasonable costs. But the P38 is causing heartache.

Still in the garage but we have been looking at Disos but so far nothing has turned up. Gutted as I love the RR but oh is skeptical. I think if we knew what was wrong and how much we could make an informed choice but how long is a piece of string at the moment.

Further update we are now mobile again bought a Discovery today so at least we can camp. RR is still in the garage so not sure if the fault will be found but at least we are now mobile. Will decide what we are doing at a later date.
