Oh dear, borntoshop, I can see why you were stressed! My wife doesn't drive on road or water, she is quite happy to leave that to me. She does make a very good boat crew though, having spent holidays on the broads on hire cruisers, on canals on narrowboats, and on various rivers on our own motor-cruisers over the years, so she knows just where to be when she is needed. Consequently we have had many stress-free boating holidays.

The Broads are about the easiest to navigate, as long as you bear in mind the tides. There are no locks to negotiate and most of the rivers are nice and wide, so plenty of room to maneuver.

Best Regards,
Colin

Thanks Colin, I thought driving on the Broads quite straightforward too - apart from the lunatic I was sharing the boat with.

he won’t drive on the continent either, he’d much rather sit in the passenger seat and instruct. My kids used to think it was funny, until they became drivers themselves!

I don't know whether they still operate as it's years since we last went, but there were SHIPS going up the river Yare from Yarmouth to Norwich, and you need to give them plenty of room, especially near Norwich where it narrows off. They are probably not that big as ships go, but they are enormous next to a motor cruiser.

There's no big ships come up the River Yare any more, the biggest we get is an old Wherry and a converted steel hull barge.

I did wonder about those ships as we didn't see any when we were up there last year. I think our last holiday on a boat on the broads was in the mid-70s. I do seem to remember a wherry called Albion, or something similar.

I'm sure I have some pictures of the Albion.
I've taken quite a few snaps from the Ferry and even put some in a youtube video.

If Julia21 gets in the right location, the sunsets and sunrise are spectacular on the Broads.

If anyone's interested, here's the link.

There's even a small video of the Ferry being launched after a refit in 2016.
