Bob61 I think that saying was meant to refer to the May blossom; the buds on my hawthorn tree are swelling and I expect the first flowers any day now. This time last year they were out, but the weather had better cheer up a bit or these clouts are staying where they are a while longer!
I have often wondered if that was the case but my mum said it was the month and I believed everything my mum said...she was right about getting piles in my old age if I sat on wet grass
