I honestly didn't know the answer to that because I have never noticed before but I have just checked out Google for Junction 9 of the M3 at Winchester where I live and entering the motorway from the A34, the A34 is 50mph but there are no national speed limit signs as you enter the motorway. I guess everyone has to know what the speed limit is on the motorway.

Hmmm... Well spotted!
Maybe it's the blue (motorway) signs in this case, that denote national speed limit "unless stated otherwise"?

Like you say, we should all know that motorway + multiple lanes means 70mph (ignoring any separate rules that towers and HGV's etc have to abide by).
The same as cyclists, horseriders, and mobility scooter riders should know not to go down there!


...Interestingly, coming off at that junction (Southbound) shows an "End of motorway" sign at the top of the slip, around the roundabout then a national speed limit sign as you exit the roundabout onto the A272.
Rightly or wrongly, I'd take the roundabout (Road between the two aforementioned signs) to be 30mph?

No, the roundabout itself is 50mph which you would never achieve given the traffic lights and the amount of traffic. It is a notorious bottleneck junction which they have been trying to sort out for years. I believe some sort of tunnel is now planned to take the motorway traffic straight onto the A34 instead of negotiating the roundabout...that should be interesting
