Put my watch into my local jeweller whilst out shopping. Returned later to collect the watch only to find that he had also replaced the scratched watchglass. The total price was £10 which I thought was a bit excessive.

I am so glad we don't have a local H Samuels

I took a watch to Samuels for a simple battery replacement, they had it for nearly two months only to tell me they couldn't get the back off. Its a shocking company and I have refused to use their services or buy any of their products since and that was over 15 years ago!

A friend of mine was a watchmaker at our local jewellers. When he retired they closed the watch repairing side of the business as there was not enough work for the business to be financially viable.
Modern electronic watches are very reliable and many people no longer wear watches but rely on their mobile phone to tell the time, so you can understand the demise of the old fashioned watchmaker.

So he'd replaced the scratched glass (albeit seemingly unrequested), and also serviced it/or done whatever you took it in for? And charged you a tenner for his troubles. Which was too dear?

You have either got your tongue firmly in the side of your cheek, or you're Scottish!

Personally, I would not take a watch for battery replacement. The watches I have are so easy to do yourself and you can buy the batteries for pence.

Never really understood why people spend such huge sums of money on watches. I bought my watch, a Cassio digital, in Argos many years ago for around £12. Keeps perfect time (well it loses about 4 seconds a month) and the batteries last ages. Why would a watch costing thousands, or even hundreds, be any better? I only want to know what the time is. If/when it goes wrong, I'll just go and buy another one.

We were looking into a jewellers window a few days ago, having a bit of fun choosing a watch each that we would not buy. I spotted a “previously used “ one for £15,000. Definitely a watch I would not buy. Anyway, it had so many dials on it, I wondered how you could tell the time.

Ok, but you got a new glass as well. How much did you want to pay for the battery alone? Did you not ask the cost beforehand?
