People usually confuse Physical Geography with Human Geography.
People also usually mistake accurate recall for intelligence.
Long and the short of it, if you are the brightest mind on Earth and you never learn that penguins exist you can't answer any questions on them regardless of how crunchy and chocolatey they are.
Ref the earlier comment about TV shows dramatising real life recent murders I couldn't agree more, and its very concerning how close to the event these dramatisations are getting with scant regard for the impact this has on the affected. Even made me wince when I found out the families on Gavin & Stacey are actually named after the Wests and the Shipmans.
As for TV nowadays becoming more and more inane, lets face it it always has been. It's a knockout? ....is just Hole In The Wall. Watch any of the old TV quiz shows on that channel (is it Quest, something like that???) and they are no better. Watch an old edition of Family Fortunes and they weren't exactly the Einstein Family vs the Hawking Family.
There was a period in the late 70s into the 80s when Saturday night telly was variety shows from the seaside with a bloke playing an easy listening piano medley on the beach surrounded by girls in bikinis.
They have been showing old totp episodes on BBC4, there was one the other day that had one of legs and co doing a dance, also Imagination doing a track, and Alvin Stardust, and Simon Bates with his hands all over the girls in the crowd - it was truly, truly awful. The only possible enjoyment out of that for me is how nostalgic that rubbish is.
If you want a good quiz show, House of Games is entertaining for the family, mastermind and university challenge are still on, and Only Connect more than supports the challenging end of the debate.
As for me, the only thing I watch every week is Saturday Kitchen, which is my chance to sit down and zone out.

If you are more choosy about the media fodder you choose then I suspect you wouldn't have this point of view. There's plenty of good, intelligent, stuff out there, and plenty of good, intelligent people. You just have to choose to watch it.
The pouty lips, botox, etc is just junk media, cheap to make and entertaining for those that choose to while away their lives watching it. You aren't going to see good quizzers on tipping point, lets be honest, it's just entertainment - watch an old episode of Bullseye, or Strike It Lucky, the questions are no more difficult.
I can only speak from my experience, obviously, but our daughter and her friends - teenagers - have heroes that are gymnasts, athletes, musicians, artists, dancers, even scientists. As they have grown up in this world of media everywhere they have learnt to be cynical and very selective about what they believe. I think this is one of the reasons engagement in politics by young people is so poor, sadly, as they don't believe the spin many of the older generation fell for.
We live in a world where, unless you need it, it's simply not necessary or useful to know where Wrexham is or how many fathhoms are in a league (about 3030) when that information is available - up to date - at the swipe of a finger. These things aren't a test of intelligence anyway, they are a test of recall.
I would rather our children's education was spent learning how to unravel the mess their preceding generations - including ours - have got the planet into.
