We have never decorated outside but we do enjoy decorating inside. We put a large tree in the front room and a small tree on a table in the back room, behind where I sit at my computer, so it gives me a cheerful background for online meetings leading up to Christmas.
One thing I don’t like about Christmas is the commercialisation of it all and it seems to be getting worse every year. I’m a Christian so Christmas has a special meaning for me and we try to ensure that takes priority in our thinking but it’s easy to get swept along in the torrent of commercialism.
We have decided to put up the decorations next weekend. There is something about fairy lights twinkling that makes me feel very cheerful.
We tend to put ours up early in December. To be honest if it were my choice I would put a tree up and a couple of bits, and not worry about lighting up the house. My family has quite a different view and while its too much for me it's still not too much and, as we both work very hard and our daughter's birthday is very close to xmas day either we do it early or not at all.
I don't have a particular view about people lighting up their houses - it's up to them and my "energy for dislike" should be used up on more important things than people enjoying themselves in their own homes.
The commercialism used to bother me more than it does now - I'm just learning to see past it. As time has gone on, and looking back on myself in the past, I've begun to see those who are vociferously grumpy about xmas as attention seeking or playing a role to act as a good foil for those who are happy about it to bounce off.
It takes a little energy to see past the commercialism of it but considering what is going on globally at the moment I'm determined to do so more than ever and remember that it's a time of year to focus on Good, counting our blessings (regardless of if we are religious or not), and (I'm fortunate to say) Family.
That said, after xmas the sooner the decs come down the better!!
We have never decorated the outside of our house but we used to put up lights etc inside, and have a tree. Mainly though it was for the kids, so as no kids are likely to be visiting our house this year I'm not sure we will bother much. We will be seeing most of our rapidly expanding family over Christmas, just not in our house.
To be honest, even when we were young and had kids at home we never put up anything until halfway through December at the earliest, and as for commercialisation, it drives me crazy! I do sometimes feel a bit of a hypocrite there though, as I volunteer on a Heritage Railway and Christmas is when they make the bulk of their money. Without it they probably wouldn't be able to survive the rest of the year, and planning for that starts in February!
Christmas Eve with my parents, until twelfth night. The smallest possible tree. My friend's parents bought a big tree "stupid extravagance" according to Mum.

Christmas eve to twelfth night is the traditional times, or so I was always told.
Our tree and decs go up around a week before Christmas until twelfth night. The kids used to decorate the tree when they had broken up for Christmas, so that filled a couple of hours.
I usually have a good clean round before putting them up, then I can ignore the dust until they come down.

I would happily avoid it altogether
Bah humbug! Surely it should be for children, we had none through choice. I can't begin to understand all the decorating outside houses etc. Plus it often seems to be by those who can't really afford it. And even before December? They may as well combine it with Halloween. I must be a miserable old fogey.

We're a lot further north at the top of Aberdeenshire and totally understand the dark days of winter. That's why the Solstice is so important as it marks the start of the return of light.

I always find it amazing that the return of light was recognised and celebrated so long ago. Christmas has been tagged onto that, but then we are getting onto religion...

The missionaries tagged their festivals onto the popular festivals of the time. It worked.
That isn't religion. It is history

I’m not putting any up. I’ve just come out of hospital after a 4 month stay and due to mobility issues I’m having to live downstairs in an annex attached to the side of the house which was previously used as a junk room. Unfortunately while having it cleaned out ready for me to use my husband didn’t spot my treasured box of Christmas tree toys and decorations. Over 25 years of precious memories was thrown away in error. I really don’t have the heart to start again, for this year anyway. I’ll see how I feel if I’m still here next year

We have an artificial tree, but may not even bother with that as we always go away. We decorate the caravan.
We are going away on the 7th until the t13th I wanted to take a small tree with us . But OH said no . It’s too much work . But I could just hide it in the car ready decorated then pop it in our window . 😊
Round us the decorations have been going up since last week and the lights are switches on in the evenings . We plan to do ours this weekend. We used not to put them up so early, but we have small grandchildren...
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
There are usually far more outside decorations up around us than there are this year by now, so I don't know whether people just aren't bothering or whether they are more concerned with their electricity bills.
We only have one small grandson now, and although we'll see him over Christmas he won't be coming to our house. Most of our grandkids are adults now apart from one who is 15 and the one who is 4. We do have two great-grandkids who we will be seeing, just not at ours, so I'm wondering if I'll bother at all this year.
