I make a point of always having a road atlas with me when we go anywhere I am not completely familiar with. I also tend to pre-plan a route, especially with the caravan, and the road map comes in handy if there are problems with the chosen route. The one time I forgot to take the map was recently when we had to make an unexpected trip to Devon for a funeral, and I regretted it! We had to divert and went miles out of our way as the sat-nav decided to "throw a wobbly" at the same time. It worked fine again later the same day and I still don't know what was wrong with it as it's been ok ever since.

Had to pull both wing mirrors in to drive down one narrow lane it sent us in Italy, then we only just squeezed through.

- I've got a mate who lives on the wilds of Exmoor between North Molton and Withypool, I've dragged the van to his place a fair few times (he's got land to pitch the van on), BUT only by the route he suggested (he's used to dragging horseboxes around the lanes), which TBH is pretty easy wide lanes that most things can pass on and only probable a couple of miles further, Sat Navs and route planners on the other hand take on sheer Demonic malice when picking routes! You'd get there, eventually, but you'd work hard at it and not enjoy the many miles of single track lanes one little bit! Strangely they nearly all pick the assortment of dreadful routes (there's a number of potential routes - all as bad as each other!) over the easy route! Think it's the route algorithm being HEAVILY biased towards shortest distance, even when set for Caravan/MH compatible!

Deffo don't trust em!

Yes, definitely shortest distance. Many of them are totally ridiculous and involve B roads when there is an alternative A road or even motorway. Even getting from our address to J11 of the M1 is stupid, only 2 miles.

Having spent many years with a part time job driving heritage double decker buses I tend to keep that in mind when planning a route, particularly with a caravan in tow. I just think "would I take this route with a bus?" If the answer is no, I don't take that route with my caravan. Google Earth was my friend, looking out for low bridges and heavily wooded roads with low trees, both of which can wreak havoc with a bus. It's easy enough to check before we go. I never rely on a sat-nav for the major part of a journey, only the last couple of miles, if at all.

Got a site booked for a couple of weeks time, site itself gives best directions and advises against a particular lane that leads directly to site, family who live in the village where site located and know the local roads proffered it as a option for accessing the camp site, ALL sat nav/route planners used it (AGAIN, the shortest route!) on their Caravan friendly routes, a quick look at Google Earth/Street view told me with some certainty I'd batter hell out of the van, not just on the sides, but on the ROOF as well, from the narrow tunnel of low overhanging trees! OK I may get a few green streaks down side of van that would polish off, but also having mushroom roof vents for shower and microwave, not to mention TV aerial battered off the roof by low hung trees, is NOT my idea of a caravan suitable route!!!!

I put a bit of research into approach roads particularly, for camp sites, and find Google Street view invaluable, I CERTAINLY do not take sat nav routes as 'safe'! …. you may technically be able to negotiate the route, but at what cost!

I always have the 1:50,000 map in the MH. I don’t even consider white unclassified roads that I might do in the car. I usually keep us off yellow C-roads due to tight bends, steep sections, narrow bridges etc.
But… CCC advocates the back road past Castle Howard to get to its Slingsby site. No warning on the handbook map…. There’s a stone arch over the road, sign gives its width which is ok for our MH. The height at the centre is ok too. But an arch curves up to the centre & this curve came perilously close to the sides of our MH roof especially at the awning rail. I had to go out to the front to check while OH inched through with mm to spare. A boxy MH would have scraped the arch & itself - and there were plenty of gouges in the stonework.
