I had a strange email to my In box (not recognised as Spam) this week, from a btinternet email address ie not an obviously dodgy domain. I’d never heard of Harry whatever, he wrote that he’d wanted to phone me for a chat to catch up but had laryngitis & had lost his voice & would I please reply to his email.
Tempting to reply robustly but I forwarded it to <report at phishing.gov.uk> as a suspicious email, got their confirmation, moved it to spam & then blocked the sender.
If the original message doesn't bounce back and/or elicits a reply, it confirms yours as a LIVE email address, that has value when sold on to scammers! The sender may not be the scammer, but harvesting live email addresses to be used/sold on to scammers.
Electronic communication has become a war zone! Beware of everything in case it's boobytrapped!

If I get a suspicious email I just delete it or forward it as phishing. I get a lot of suspicious calls on my landline, but if I don't recognise the number I let it go to my answering machine. It seems to have got much worse since July. Firstly I was getting loads from various London numbers, then it switched to Southampton, then to Liverpool. I don't know anybody in those areas who is likely to phone me. In the last few days all the dodgy calls seem to be from mobiles. All our friends and family come up with their names on our caller-display and they all know to leave a message if they are ringing from a number that is not their own. Scammers rarely leave any kind of message. I never get any dodgy calls on my mobile, but then it is a 20+ year old dumb-phone that I don't even switch on unless I am going out with it. I only really keep it for emergencies.

Colin

I don't know if it was a scam or a wind-up, but I recently "sold" my Gobur using the Classified on this site. Here goes:----
Received a query via site, replied that it was for sale.
Received an offer which I accepted.
After a couple of weeks received a cheque for amount and a further £1200 to pay the purchasers agent who was going to collect it.
Took the cheque to the bank and asked them if it was genuine and they couldn't confirm validity. It was a First Direct cheque, with no account holders name, just signed by the bank. After waiting for the cheque to clear, I checked my bank account and the cheque was in there but not cleared. A week later it was cancelled and the cheque returned and I received a copy of it from my bank.
The "Buyer" was only named on the e-mails I had received as "Delores Burkett" using a GMail account.
I had already trawled Social Media and the only Delores Burkett I had found was a woman in the U.S.A.
I don't know if she was Phishing or what, but the wind-up didn't work.
Just be aware of this kind of thing.
(Not even bothered about the "Sale" as I'm not too bothered about selling.)

There is currently a phone text scam in play.
You revieve a text apparently from the government stating that you have not claimed your personal allowance and it will be given to a needy pensioner if you do not claim within 3-5 days.
A dodgy looking web address will transfer you to a fake government website where they will take personal and bank account details in order to pay your claim.
It is of course a scam, they will use your greed and time pressure to make you grab at strings.
Look it up online it's the Personal Allowance phone text scam.

Sadly the scammers are more than happy to take from vulnerable pensioners, only by exposing and sharing these scams can we be safe!

I've had quite a few calls from unknown numbers asking if my name is Mr..... from an Asian male with a very sfrong accent telling me his name is "Stephen".
I keep telling them that my name is Abdul Abulbul Abeer, and they hang up!
(do you know the song?)

I just never answer unknown numbers. If it's genuine or urgent they will leave a message, if they are a scammer they won't.

I have similar calls on my landline, always claiming to be "bank security" and claiming payments made to Amazon and also to international sites (always both) for a couple of hundred pounds. Normally I just switch off, but just occasionally I press to continue...
My first question is "Which bank? You don't say which of my banks you represent?"
My next question "which card was used (card number totally false and does not comply with modulo code)?"
Next - another (false) card number PLUS (false) account details for a different "bank"...
But for very determined scammers...
I very rarely reach the time where I am asked for a password to access an account (password = "kiss my ****, now go forth and multiply").....
