OMG they never said they were going to cost so much that the average person couldn't afford to buy them. That is stupid. They have been paid for already, if they are not being used they should be released for a nominal fee not ridiculous amounts.
Don't think they have been paid for already. They are given to sponsors & the "olympic community" and returned unwanted.

In my opinion the spare tickets should be given to those people volunteering their time to help at the Olympics.
Wouldn't they be too busy to use their tickets?
They do get time off and are working morning or afternoon shifts. Although I'm sure they are tired it seems an appropriate way to reward those who are giving their time.
Plus paying for their own food and accommodation in London at this very expensive time.
I have been trying to get tickets for the sprint canoeing at Eton Dorney next week. They appear to be available and let you put them in your "shopping basket" but when it comes to actually getting them it says they are not available. So why are they appearing as available in the first place then?
A few observations from the two paid events we attended (got the tickets in the second ballot):
At the table tennis it was mostly full apart from one smaller block, which seemed to be sparsely populated by athletes from the teams who had players.
At the hockey game, quite a few empty seats, as there were two matches - a lot of the Aussies left after the first game (vs South Africa), and a quite a few Dutch fans only arrived for the second game (Vs South Korea); however, the two (British) guys next to us only stayed for the first half of the first match!
Trying (but failing) to get some more tickets; happily have some paralympic ones for September
The Olympic Committee has resolved the empty seat problem....they sent all the empty seats to Headingley this weekend for the test Match v South Africa...I was there and saw empty seats for the first time at a test match . The worst thing was that on Saturday the County members stand was empty. Maybe empty seats are a sign of these austerity times....

Agree it is ridiculous, sometimes the search shows just the higher priced tickets - fine you don't have to continue, but if you find some others that do say they are available for £20 or £50 it takes another half an hour to complete the search and finally say 'sorry not available' and at midnight when you are tired and ready for bed.
Have given up.
I am a massive Olympic fan and many many years ago I used to run for my county and couldn't get tickets.
Some of my children's friends have tickets for 9 or ten events. I have been told many people have ordered too many, decided to go on holiday and forfeit the rest for other events.
It also seems that certain sports, tickets are aimed at different sectors of the public, which doesn't allow others to enjoy the sport.
It's really disappointing as we would all love to go!
