Resurrecting this post just to say it is that time of year again and we are having 'pudding night' a week tomorrow (23 Nov). Mum is still going strong and the one grand daughter that was missing last year because of illness will be with us this year via skype as she now lives in Antigua. A great grandson is now in the RAF but has managed to get the weekend home so he won't miss it.
We had a big party for mums 90th birthday in January and as she's always said she's 49 she has decided she wants a 50th birthday party this time, so guess what? she gets what she wants. We won't be having the newspaper reporters this year but other than that it will be as normal. Looking forward to it yet again.

Saw in an article somewhere, for the life of me can't remember where, that one from either Aldi (Lidl?) came out top of the taste range - above those from places like Fortnum and Mason.
Mince pies and Christmas pud are for life not just for Christmas.
A few years ago I was bought a Fortnum's Christmas pudding as a gift, to be honest it was nothing special.

They all taste the same once you have poured a good glug of brandy on and set fire to it!
My kids asked me to do that the other year but would the wretched thing catch light? I ended up wasting half a bottle of brandy and ruining the pudding!

Err, no...., just kept sloshing the stuff on and lighting matches
I like Asda Smarprice mince pies best! They are thin like mince pies should be, and not deep and sickly like most of the bought ones. Of course, the very best ones are home made using tartlet pastry! The best Christmas pudding at a reasonable price is Tesco Finest 6 month matured.
Tried the Heston chocolate centred Christmas pudding recently and it is gorgeous, then tried the Aldi £3ish pudding and that too is excellent. I wouldn't say that I am a Christmas pudding fan, but I would have either of these again without hesitation.
