I work in the Blood Transfusion department of a regional
general hospital and know first hand how many lives are saved by blood donations, not just occasionally but every day.....

Never, ever doubt how worthwhile giving blood is and please don't mix up the news in the OP with the donations we are asked to give

I did regularly but not for a long time - it would be a full day to go over to the mainland to donate and don't have the cover to help with elderly parent. Bit sick about it as I'm O neg which is useful.

I gave blood regularly, and made 25 donations, but then had a series of operations which put paid to my blood donor status for a long time. I was just gearing up to donating again when I had to have another series of ops. I've just passed the two-year mark and could probably give blood again now. Once you get out of the habit it's hard to get back. Every time the unit comes to my area I seem to be away from home for family reasons.

I won't give up though. Better get round to it. I only have a few years left before I'll be too old.

I'm a donor.....have been since I was 19.....I also have a morbid fear of blood.....I'm not joking, when I donate I can't see any blood at all otherwise I pass out! My local unit are so used to it now that my donations are pretty stress free for everyone concerned.

On the flip side of this, someone I loved very much was diagnosed with a rare type of leukaemia last year and had to have platelets and blood a lot....(I just used to sit with my eyes closed throughout the days he had them!) It made me realise just how many un-sung hero's are out there.....

If so ask to be paid next time. 80% of the plasma service has today been sold to an American venture capitalist company who will invest £50m.

They will be paid back by those people who freely give them the product they will make billions from.

we'll this is wrong for a start. the nhsbt do not collect plasma donations any more they haven't for many years. its bought its cheaper. blood production is a very expensive process costing not to far from 100 a unit.

there are slot of false ideas about why you can and can't give blood.

travel is only a 6 month wait from malaria areas. everywhere else it does not matter. west Nile virus is no longer an issuer they have a test for it. unless you have been ill with it of course.

tattoos and piercings are a 4 month wait.

lots of other rules have changed from the past worth checking again if you can donate especially regards medication.

oh and if you have received a blood transfusion after a certain year (can't remember for certain) you can not give because there is a very small risk of cjd. and you can't test for cjd so untill there is a test available its done to prevent a possible how ever small mass out break of cjd in years to come.

Going to check the local area and see if I can start giving again.

When I was pregnant I was given a card by the nurse which says if my blood is used for a transfusion it can only be given to a Rh positive person. If I need a transfusion I have to be regarded as a Rh negative recipient. I lack a D antigen. Seems I am of a group not often met with!!!

Don't know if that makes me special or not???

No, really?!
