If you have a dead bulb, get at 16 people to stand in a circle beneath it and wave their hands at it and it will come back on! Many hands make light work!

I like that one

I have bought standard B22 (bayonet) bulbs from here and have a few of the dimmable 7W ones at £12.50ish

Nice warm light and good dimmable function with two on one standard dimmer switch.
They also do a 9W version non dimmable which should be even brighter if you don;t need dimmer

The 7W is somewhere between 40 and 60W incandescent replacement I would say, closer to 60 than 40 though.
Have had them for a year this month and they would have paid back compared to 60W standard ones so all savings going forward/
3 year warranty as well

my 2p....

LED anre improving, fast, and prices coming down, less fast, but still quit quickley.
LED GU10s, expect to pay around £8 for something reputable, more if you want the COB LED types (around £10)
dimmables slightly more.

GU10s will give you the most energy saving, especially in downlights, swapping 250W for 25W soon saves money back.

LED candles around £6, golfballs about the same, these can be ok, but may be larger than original type ones,

GLS or "bulb" shaped are currently around the £9-15 mark, and tbh, im not overly impressed, you do get a large dark area behind it where the driver is housed, so not the allround light you get from traditional GLS lamps

All LEDs are avaliable in warm (30-3500K) or cool/daylight (6500K) and avaliable in dimmable/not dimmable, you may need to change the dimmer. (we sue Varilite VPro)

CFLs are still good, stick type cheaper than spirals, and do come on brighter faster than spirals,
these range fron £2 - £5 (7-25W) as standard most come as "white" 4000K

avaliable in dimmable, but a large price premium on these.

lowest efficiency are the halogen replacements, a halogen capsule in a traditional shaped outer envelope, these range from £1.00-£1.30 as a rule of thumb for these 28W=40 42=60 70=100 colour of 30-3500K easily dimmable.

FYI, for those who really want the "old style" lamps. these are still out there as rough service lamps, but are also pushing £1.20 each now.

Don't get me started on this one, all very well if you have the option and money to burn, but we have to use the old style 40w opal golfball bulbs for our business, so we went around all our suppliers buying in bulk before it became more difficult to get hold of them, we now have several hundred in stock so should last us for quite some time, at least until the alternatives become cheaper and less hideous.

You can still get them for now, and we plan to buy some more in the New Year, at present they can be had for around 60p each if you bulk buy.

We also stocked up on 40w candle bulbs for our home, as we have old fashioned lights downstairs that would look ridiculous with these monstrosities in them.

They are only really fit for concealed lamps with shades, we have a couple of the low energy ones for a table lamp and standard lamp and the hall lights upstairs because they don't show.

Ridiculous, in my view, there are far more important things, and this strikes me as profiteering thinly disguised as green energy measures tbh.

Jane.

We have quite a few track spotlights and downlighters in the house, which use ES 40 or 60 watt spotbulbs, and are controlled by dimmer switches. They give a good light but are now expensive to run.

Where we want to have them on a lot.....stairs, kitchen and lounge.....we have replaced them with LEDs, using screw in adaptors that take GU10 lamps. We are using 4 watt warm white with a 120 degree beam angle, dimmable.

We have purchased the lamps from 2 sources.....

http://www.lightupuk.co.uk/leds-and-lamps/led-lamps/led-mains-voltage/led-gu10-lamps/dimmable-4w-gu10-led-lamp

.....but prefer the colour of the ones from LightUp. They work fine with our 25 year old MK dimmers

The adaptors we bought from Low Energy Supermarket on e Bay, about £1 each. You get them for bayonet fittings too.

Just out of curiosity, what type of business has to use old style lamps?

Anybody checked up on how to dispose of broken low energy bulbs. It involves rubber gloves wrspping paper and sealed plastic bags and warns not to use a vacuum cleaner nor putting it in with household rubbish. I think they contain small amounts of mercury.

Ollie, in answer to your query, we own a business that supplies backstage equioment for film, tv and fashion shows and shoots, among many other things, we supply the old fashioned style Hollywood lighted make up mirrors with bulbs around them, which we also design and manufacture ourselves.

Obviously, the new energy saving bulbs are not going to look great with these, so it is pretty imperative that we can still get hold of the old style golfball bulbs!

Hence my bulb hoarding habits

Jane.

I've found one good use for the little fluorescent tube-type lights (the flat ones - GX53 fitting) - our static caravan has them in the over-bed lights, and as they take a while to come to full brightness when you switch them on, you can actually get up to go to the loo without a scary bright light - I KNEW there had to be a purpose for them!!  As for the same lights in the lounge area - they need putting on ages before you need them to give them a fighting chance of warming up, and I can't see to do my needlework with them!!
