Remember when cat. convertors cost thousands to replace at first, now down to under £50 for most, dpf's will be exactly the same as the cheap copies from abroad come in....

Hmm and like a great number of after market cats they won't work either. Sadly the original poster had made some very valid points, CI engines are inherently dirty and it does require some fairly tricky software and hardware to keep them clean, which when goes wrong is expensive.

We could have a rant about having to balance twin carbs once a month with a hose stuck in yer ear.
I do remember being annoyed at the demise of the carb.I can strip a carb and tune a car with a carb but modern fuel injected cars have me stumped.
As for cats, the best car I had was a 73 midget with a cherrybomb exhaust. Loved that exhaust note.

My Passat Estate diesel has over 250,000 miles on the clock, and still purrs along towing. Will drive it till it won't go any longer as the resale value would be pants.

Yes I remember the days when they said when the cat covertor went the cost could exceed the vslue of the car, IIRC the figure of £1,000 was banded about circa 1990, aout £2,000 in todays money. But when I had my cat replaced about 2 years ago it cost about £150.00.
