you could consider the Micro Four Thirds models from Panasonic and Olympus. These offer great image quality and DSLR features but are much more compact. This equally applies to their lenses, a telephoto zoom is much smaller than a DSLR of the same focal length.
The best camera is the one you have with you. I think DSLR's are too big to carry around regularly. A good starting point second hand could be a Panasonic Lumix G2 or G3 to give you an idea of the features and what is available.
I've been doing a lot of research since I first posted. Thought I had it sussed but now the 4 thirds seem to be what I am looking for. I have been googling and googling and have it down to the olympus em10 or the Panasonic lumix gx7. My head is bursting as there doesn't seem to be much difference between them . Any comments on these? The shops I have phoned seem to recommend the one they sell and I'm finding it difficult to get a shop that sell both.
Before buying my Canon DSLR I had an Olympus bridge camera and the results were really good. I would have gone for an Olympus DSLR but they seem to be a bit hot and cold as to whether they are in that market. Margaret has a Panasonic mid range camera and that is also pretty good and it just slips in the pocket!!!
Have a look in PC World/Curry's at the Nikon kits..
Ask about the Nikon with the VR Lens (Vibration Reduction). The Leeds shop had one displayed with 2 lenses and I was sorely tempted, but controlled myself. I'm happy with my Panasonic FZ45 which I bought as a back-up for my Canon. I hardly ever use the Canon now.

some days you are the tree.
try second hand ,mifsuds, wex, and a whole lot more do used stuff with warranties,,canon 7d is good though the new mark twos is even better but pricey,i use a nikon d90 ,but its the lenses as well its quite an expensive hobby ,hence going down the second hand route..
After all my researching, phoning shops for advice and visiting shops I went for the micro four thirds - bought hubby the Olympus EM1. Its a fantastic camera and the photos on it so far are fab (yep, I gave him his Christmas prezzie!). And after all my hard work I managed to get the
Olympus EM5 for myself. Another fantastic camera. We are both booked onto a day course and have several books to read. We are already tip-toeing out of auto by using P mode although we could stay in auto and take great photos. The EM1 is a bit more advanced than the EM5 (reflected in the price) - the wifi facility is incredible - but quality of photos on both are great. I chose the EM5 ahead of other cameras not only because of the good spec but also because It felt right in my hand.
