Having read Bob61's last post, it seems that the very large fireworks that he describes with 250 shots and very loud bangs can still be purchased by ordinary members of the public, which I agree is not sensible at all, perhaps there ought to be further restrictions on category 3 fireworks, however how far will this go and where will the line be drawn?
It seems from what I have read in the Ban the Bang petition, that all aerial fireworks should be banned, and nothing should make any noise at all, leaving those of us who choose to have fireworks with pretty much just the 'fountain' style fireworks to choose from, there is a heck of a difference between a little rocket from a selection pack and a 250 shot exploding 'weapon of mass destruction'.
Both myself, my husband and our children have enjoyed firework displays at home but if this proposed restriction goes too far, that will likely be denied to our grandchildren, as it probably will be the catalyst to the day whereby kids waving sparklers will be considered too dangerous, as I said before, I do have great sympathy with dogs and their owners and of course harm to wildlife, but there has been far greater and widespread damage caused to wildlife over the years by other means than a couple of days of people letting off fireworks once or twice a year.
I realise that all areas are different, but this year we have heard some fireworks for Diwali, not that many actually considering the population demographic here, and of course some for 5th November, plus hearing what I assume to be a couple of displays on the nearest weekend, but that is about it, we live in an urban area so quite frankly would expect more, but it was all over by about 10pm at the latest each evening, the majority we heard were between 7 and 8.30pm, so clearly the chances are that these were families with young children.
It is by no means an all year round situation for us, and not a major nuisance at all.
The reason I offered a comparison with the nuisance that dogs can cause if owned by idiots was simply to show that you can't simply go around banning everything that some people enjoy and get pleasure from but others don't.
Banning things that are a source of pleasure or enjoyment to some people, or of some function, but might cause someone else any considerable inconvenience and annoyance, in that case lets ban children, alcohol, and politicians (although their function is questionable I think the annoyance is a given!)
I do feel that taking any restrictions too far will spoil what is a traditional family activity once a year, that most people are reasonable and sensible about.

I'm at a bit of a loss here as over the last few years, people here have been setting off fewer and fewer fireworks; they were removed from sale from our local Co-op and Spar shops in response to demand and the fireworks that used to be let off after prize-giving on the Mull Rally stopped. We had less than five minutes of quiet fireworks on the Sat prior to 5th and ditto last Saturday - on Bonfire night itself, one set of local disgraced themselves by letting off three very loud bangs (and that did send my dog loopy). I understand that they have been told the error of their ways very very strongly - by the locals.
We do have a New Year display, lasting no more than 10 minutes. Monies are raised by locals and the display is run by people who've gone through the system and licensing to run such displays. Those with pets know it will happen and when and can and do protect their pets, though why my dog seems to find this display interesting and isn't scared - he'll sit and watch it with me, despite some very loud bangs echoed round the Bay - I don't know and can't explain. The New Year display is a celebration and it seems wrong to ban it. Doesn't seem to upset the livestock grazing next door either!
Yes, stray rockets can cause damage but so can the chinese lanterns so many on this forum supported not so long ago - and they also have had severe repercussions for livestock and wildlife, if not so much for our pets!!
I don't see the need for personal loud fireworks in back gardens and don't do that, but I do like public displays such as our local one. However, what urbanites and sub-urbanites might remember is that it can be a very long way to a public display - if a small place or family wants a short display so their kids and family can experience some pleasure - why should you prevent it?
On a lighter note - Bob61 - "Dogs bark, cows moo, cocks crow and pesky crows make a heck of a din...unavoidable in the countryside but that is no excuse for setting off excessively loud explosive fireworks in residential areas." Sums it up! :-)
