Quote: Originally posted by Delboya on 19/1/2015Had mine since Feb 2012, so got the benefit of lower capital prices (although not as cheap as today) but the highest FiT tariff - currently 48.07p. A few comments in response to posts above:1. The FiT tariff is the one to look for - not what you sell back - which is called Grid Export. For example, in 2014, my FiT income was £1867.84 against a grid export of £65.86.2. It's very likely that a new inverter will be likely around the half distance - current pricing (for a 4KW system) is about £1000.

3. The FiT tariff dropped by 50p per KWH on the 1 jan, but they have been gradually dropping on a quarterly basis since March 2012.

4. Just modified my original spreadsheet to reflect current prices/income, and assuming an initial cost of £5k, payback is sometime in year 7. The forecast for my own is sometime in year 4 (ie 2015)!! Still better than leaving your money in the bank/building society. My spreadsheet assumes you have the cash - ie there are no finance charges.

5. Rent-a-roof schemes mean that you have NO initial or maintenance costs, but all income goes to the scheme principals. Your only benefit is SOME free electricity - the EST (Energy Savings Trust) roughly estimate the savings to be about a third of your electricity bill - excluding space heating costs.

6. If you are going to do it, it is worth also looking at a power dump switch to dump spare capacity into your hot water tank. Not suitable for all systems (eg if you always use electric showers), but it has saved me a lot of money. For example, last year I turned off the boiler in April, and switched it back on in late Sept, and on only 2 occasions did I have to give a manual boost to the immersion heater. (Google Immersun - not the cheapest now but this will get you started.)

I have detailed figures/graphs of my usage/income for the past 3 years if you are interested.

My panels are from Israel,They pick up the slightest light,I can go on the PC or Iphone and see what each panel is doing, and a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly read out what they have produced,Plus the weather forecast.

Well...

We've just had a guy over to quote us for panels.

Explained everything, both types - 'rent a roof' and buy your panels.

We're NOT eligible for RAR as we don't have enough roof area for it to be financially worth it for whoever does it.

So, we've got a price (not signed the dotted line), for bought panels...

Going to have a think now....

Yeah I know about when I said to be careful....

But curiosity crept in again so we got a quote just to see what we could do.

On the plus side, I did research the company that came out, and they're not one of these fly by night ones...

May have missed this advice being given out. If you do go ahead with the PV system, I would advise that you try to purchase mid range panels or better. Yes technology changes constantly but it will make a difference in the long run. But then you can say that about all the PV Kit to be used. Well I hope you sort it out.

The ad I responded to for the quote was in the Farmers Weekly. They said they used Panasonic panels...

They are called 'Solarlec'. And so if you're able to look at their website too, please let me know what you think of them etc?

We used a firm called A Shade Greener. They are from Yorkshire way I believe.  They "rent " our roof , and since installation our bills have gone down.  They did a survey of the roof first to see if it was strong enough, and were very proffesional. No mess, no prblems , panels been in abot 2 years now

If your roof is too small to make a RaR scheme viable for them then how did they justify you funding the whole project yourself?

A point on panel efficiency: the panel cost is only about 25% of the installation cost. Labour, cabling, racking, inverters etc. make up the rest. Using fewer more efficient, more expensive panels with the associated savings in the overall installation might actually work out cheaper than using more of a cheaper type.

If the product, beit panel or inverter, comes with a 10 year warranty then you should be able to rely on it for at least 10 years. Does the warranty on a panel cover any reduction in efficiency over time? All semiconductors will degrade but by what degree. The panel will probably continue to produce electricity for the warranty period but by how much reduced? If anyone knows the answer I'd be interested.

Are you a mind reader?

We've been told to look for the 300watt panels and try not to go for the 250watt one we've been quoted on...

Any idea where / who does them...?

Panasonic and the likes of Solarworld are both good panels.

We've just had a guy over yesterday to survey the house for the charging point installation for when her new Mitsi' PHEV comes...

His company also does solar PV, so I questioned him briefly, and he said he could do MORE panels for not much more than the other quote...

And they use Solarworld who are a German company.

They also do both 250watt panels, and 330watt panel.

He didn't have time to talk properly and he was running late to another charge point survey, so he's coming back properly for a discussion about the solar panels next week.....
