My Maths teacher back in the late 70's had the easiest job in the world. He would come in to class, state that he was only interested in teaching those that wanted to learn, the rest could sit at the back of the class reading their magazines so long as they answered their name to the register.
He used to teach 3 kids, the rest of the class were left to their own devices at the back.
I failed my CSE in Maths

I think there are plenty of examples of people in all sorts of professions that are willing to bleed themselves dry through overwork. Whether this is done through incompetence in the job or keenness to progress to higher positions is difficult to know.Perhaps you should read the school teacher pay and conditions document pages 47 to 48 to see what the working days and working time requirements are for the role. However, teaching is a vocation and not a role you can truly switch off from.

Don't know whether this is addressed at me or not, but there are other reasons for the hours one has to put in. In my case it was a wholly incompetent boss who left a trail of disaster in her wake, and also managed to destroy another authority before being sacked. Sadly she was well supported by the local politicians who realised the problem far too late.

As for the pay and conditions document, I know it well, and anyone who thinks teachers have only to work 1265 hours a year are sadly misformed. Note the following paragraph:

In addition to the hours a teacher is required to be available for work under paragraph 52.21 or 52.22, a teacher must work such reasonable additional hours as may be necessary to enable the effective discharge of the teacher’s professional duties, including in particular planning and preparing courses and lessons; and assessing, monitoring, recording and reporting on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned pupils.

From a recent government report:

On average, all school teachers report working over 50 hours per week, with primary and secondary school headteachers reporting more than 60 hours.

Teachers workload survey

No not aimed at you. The document was for the OP so that they could see the conditions on working time.

No one was saying that teachers only work 1265 hours. However, there is protection in their contract to make sure that they do not have to work an unreasonable numbers of hours.

'However, there is protection in their contract to make sure that they do not have to work an unreasonable numbers of hours.'

This is definitely not adhered to. I taught Year 6 in a primary school. I was also Science and ICT coordinator. I was in school before 8am and rarely left before 6pm.That is fifty hours work to start with.I did the majority of my marking and planning at home. I had a large amount of marking and I always had at least thirty five children in my class. I had no teaching assistant and no half day off for planning. That wasn't too long ago.

I am sorry I haven't read all your replies .
I would say ask in a school if you can go in and do some voluntary work for a few days either a high school or primary year 6 this will give you an in site into it . Also speaking to teachers in the school.
A lot is about classroom management. Apart from the volume of work . I am not a teacher but a TA ( NNEB ) coming up to retirement .
My son is a science teacher though.

I've known a few people retrain as teachers after redundancies in industry.

Some have taken to it and found good schools, some have dropped out during training and ended up in school technician roles.

Others have qualified and done supply work, usually in the worst schools and carried on intil they draw their industry pensions, or find another way out, one emigrated to NZ where it is much more laid back and is now doing well there.

I don't know anything about the working life of teachers.

What I do know is that if you intend working in a people (or animal) related environment, you should really, really want to do so, and not just because you think it might be a job that doesn't demand hard work
