Faulty sender unit, actuator, or wiring linking components. The wires usually enter the door near the hinge, opening and closing the door can cause wires to wear, short circuit and eventually break.

Just a quick update as my faith was repaid. On removing the first door panel they found a corroded wire which was sending signals back to the computer, on further investigation there were more small wires and this is where the problem was, so no motors to be replaced and a bill of £200 rather than £650. They also got my key fob working again. In fairness they could have just said they'd replaced them while actually just replacing the corroded cable, I'd have been no wiser. But then again, I would now recommend them to others and return there if I had any other problems.
Can now pack the car for camping
Good to hear not as bad as thought. You can have a few more meals and drinks out now.
