Perhaps, if your son had notified the change in his circumstances meant he had to exceed the mileage agreed before he exceeded it, the insurance company might have come to an agreement that was less onerous. My son's friend was in the same boat as yours last year but when he landed a new job, requiring him to travel further, he rang up and explained. His revised premium was just £50 for an additional 5000 miles. As an experienced driver, when my Mum got ill and my mileage had to go up considerably, I contacted my insurer's and had no problem upping the mileage and no additional premium to pay.

He did and was told he could have another 1000 for £166.

Your son was obviously much luckier than mine!

My son is being made out by some to have done something wrong, he hasn't!!
When he knew he was going to exceed the mileage he rang them, what more could he do? Obviously from the post above stating his son got an extra 5000 miles for £50 it would appear we are right to feel slightly aggrieved

Sorry, TraceyD, didn't mean to imply your son had done anything wrong. It just seemed a whacking charge for 1000 extra miles. My son's friend's BB insurance annual premium is higher than your son's so maybe it's just the way they work? I know he had some issues with the BB early doors over so-called erratic driving (inevitable on our single track roads in summer) and had a battle to sort it out, so maybe he did benefit from this.

I think there's degree of over-sensitivity here.

No-one has said the lad did anything wrong.

What some have said is "the premium was part based on mileage. The mileage has increased. More premium will be charged". That's it.

What I think the story does highlight is the need to choose the right product and not just on price. It seems even amongst the black box insurers there can be a difference in approach, and being aware of they'll do y in the event of x seems sensible.

Go Compare say they're not right for everyone.

What to watch out for with telematics insurance.

At the end of the day Mike, when you are 18, have a job that pays the ridiculous teenage minimum wage and have just past your test, it's all about the price I'm afraid. Some quotes we did came in at £4000 and more! Same with my daughter and she was 19, so no 'boy racer'. After a year my daughter's insurance had more than halved, but i'm guessing my son's now may not, no reflection on his driving, which, again in my opinion, is wrong.

The outcome at the end of the day is that the insurance company will not only lose my son's custom via his car insurance, it will also rule itself out of contention for any of my future policy renewals - car, home, contents, etc.

Just think the whole thing could've been handled better and a little more consideration given to my son's circumstances. Hey ho, lesson learned, we'll stump up and move on.

The original policy was priced at £200 for every 1000 miles driven. The 'excess' charge is priced at £166 for every additional 1000 miles so actually works out cheaper than the original policy!

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.
If the additional premium is paid then the driver (or his Mum)pays £1 for every 5.12445095+++miles driven.(very close to 22o yds extra per £1)
The original contract was at £1 for every 5 miles driven.
Therefore they are asking less in total for his driving experience. (Always assuming of course that on the last day of the Insurance calendar he reaches, but does not surpass the 7000 mile limit.
