Not sure if you will see this Mike but wanted to let you know that I just got back from Devon and saw none of the issues you highlighted though Torquay was an eye-opener! English Riviera? That title has got to be against the trades descriptions act surely?!

Dartmoor, Dartmouth, Totness - all gorgeous, you are very lucky to live where you do.

Great to hear you had a great time, I never take for granted where we live, I would live nowhere else in the UK.

I was born in Torquay, so I should be singing its praises from on high.......But I won't because it is hardly St Tropez, but if you can believe it Torquay is far bette than it was 20 years ago, and is making real efforts to regain its once fully warranted "English Riviera" tag of latter years. The new Palm Court complex near the beach is a good start, even I like it there!

The problems started in the 70s when the great unemployable could draw their dole wherever they wanted, so we had a massive influx of dole claimers bringing with them crime, violence and drugs. Torquay was known as the "Costa Del Dole" quite shameful for such a lovely area. Who knows, within the next 20 years Torquay may rightly be called the English Riviera again, without fear of a call from trading standards.

If if you think Torquay is not all it should be, did you go to Paignton! OMG 😳 Why people go there for a holiday is well beyond me, nice steam train ride to Kingswear though.

I live right on the edge of Dartmoor, and if I chose, I do not have to see a holiday maker all day. They tend to all congregate at the honey pots, most not wanting to walk more thN 100mts from the car.

Please take this with the humour that is intended, but we call holiday makers "Haemoroids" in Devon. They are all red, hang around in bunches and are a pain in the arse. 😀 We love you really, especially if you can reverse in the narrow Devon lanes. 👍😀

No offence taken. Thankfully no reversing needed either! It's always good to hear from the locals when you visit somewhere.

I have to say though your road network is an absolute nightmare, not just the small windy roads but also the road signs and markings. A road sign will read x y and z 1m and then when you get to the 1m point the signs now read a, b and c! Very confusing.

Will definitely be back - North Devon next time though nd I'll make sure to get some local tips before I leave so I can avoid their equivalent of Torquay!!

Road signs deliberately designed to confuse the unwary, they all make sense to us.

Only a holiday maker would comment about our windy roads and lanes, it is very hilly here! All part of the experience. Glad you had a good time 😀
