FionaW, made me smile - not a Waitrose or Booths for over 100 miles!
I refuse to pay ludicrous prices for coffee.
It's why we don't wander around with a paper coffee cup in hand very often. Our nearest Booths is in Englandshire, our nearest Waitrose is a considered decision's drive away. So I do without coffee (or tea) outside the home / motorhome, generally speaking.
Work has two free bean to cup machines. At home we have a Nespresso and various other paraphanalia.
The last time we bought coffee out was in France in the summer and we didn't take much notice of the price. What I have noticed is a lot of French cafes are using pod machines....
As we were backpacking we had coffee bags which are surprisingly good. As for Costa (head office registered in Livingston), Starbucks and the like, I can recommend them in Ireland as they use milk from the company I work for and the petrol stations over here often give away free coffee on bank holidays etc for tired drivers.

I buy ground coffee from Aldi for about £2 per pack. Lasts me a whole week and get 28 mugs of coffee from it. Brewed cowboy style with frothed milk. Costs about 12p per mug with cost of milk and sugar. Say £3.40 a week as against £70 from a coffee bar. No contest and much better flavour.
The same applies to Post mix soft drinks, about 98% proffit, and most of the contents of the cup consist of plumbed into the dispensing pump tap water and Ice.
In some outlets and bars, the price for a pint of diet Coke or Lemonade is no cheaper than a pint of draught beer, a propper rip off.

There's a simple answer to being ripped off with high soft drinks prices in bars, ask for a glass of tap water with ice. I do nowadays when I don't fancy drinking alcohol, tap water doesn't have all the additives contained in carbonated soft drinks and is a more healthy option.

That depends where you live. My past house had water that stank of chlorine.
