FTTP refers to a fibre optic connection which will allow greater data transmission and reception speeds.

If the service comes from BT or via the likes of TalkTalk, Sky and others who deliver their services since de-regulation over the BT infrastructure they will want to install a telephone point in your house as their means of connection to your property. This doesn’t mean you have to have a telephone / landline from them. It is merely their terminology for the connection between their network and your house.

It is very likely that the last bit of connection to your house will be via copper wire (ie a traditional telephone connection). To my knowledge only VirginMedia actually deliver fibre to the house and if you aren’t in an area they serve bad luck.

Just to be clear, Virgin don't use fibre to the house in most areas. They use fibre to feed their street cabinets then a coaxial cable from there to the house for TV/internet. There is a copper wire pair twisted round the coaxial cable to provide phone connection.

They do in this area because it was originally put in by a company called CableTel. They were taken over by NTL, who were taken over by Virgin, so we've had fibre to the house for at least 15 years. I can't remember when it first went in as we have been here 28 years.
